I'm just wondering what is the value added / hype of having Mandolin back design similar to regular bike.
If we are doing card effects NOT focus on back design, lay person will not notice that this is not regular bike. Sounds good, right? But, if the effects are not modifying the card back, why bother Mandolin since we can produce any gaffs for regular bike if we don't modify the card back. However, if we perform effect that required modifying the back design (e.g. moving the angles), then the heat will be on the card back. Lay person may figure out that the back are different than regular bike. Then, there is no advantage over using other non-bike back deck/gaff. Better card handling may be another selling point. However, if we do a lot of florishing or XCM, desk look like regular bike is a moot point. Why bother? For argument sake, we can buy the Gold Seal Bike. For me, the only driving force to switch to Mandolin if the price is at the same level as regular bike and most gaffs / effects are produced for Mandolin. Ask yourself some questions, what percentage of your effect repertory required modified card back? Can you live without it? Does it worthwide for you to pay a premium and switch to Mandolin just for that "percentage"? |

I agree with Voldermort. If they still asking for $3 per deck (because they claim it's a Golden Seal), these Mandolin decks would never be able to replace 808's. I know some people don't mind spending about $3 or $4 on a deck of cards, but for those who use many of the decks, $2 difference will give big impact on the spending.
So for now, I think Mandolin is still considered as collection card. I just hope they could lower the price.

The new pricing at USPCC has changed so much (about 70 % price increase!!!) that even if I (or Murphys with their Mandolins) would order hundreds of thousand decks the price that we have to pay USPCC would still be much higher than what Costco charges YOU. It is strange, Costco is losing money when they sell Bicycles, USPCC is losing money when they sell to Costco. It seems to be a kind of political decision to keep the Bicycle decks at Costco that low. But it does not reflect the real cost or value of these decks. Strange, very strange.

For Immediate Release
August 30, 2010 FUN INCORPORATED AND U.S. PLAYING CARD COMPANY CONTINUE TO PRODUCE BICYCLE GAFF CARDS FUN Incorporated, America’s largest magic manufacturer, and the U.S. Playing Card Company will continue to produce and distribute gaffed decks and cards on Bicycle 808 Rider Back cards. “Magicians can rest easy knowing that Bicycle cards will not be supplanted anytime soon,” said Graham Putnam, President of FUN Inc. All standard Bicycle Rider back gaff cards, including Double-backed, Blank Face, double-face, and Blank Back cards will still be produced by U.S. Playing Card. FUN Inc. has made a substantial investment in these cards to insure that they will remain available through its worldwide network of retailers. Though recent policy changes at USPCC have limited magicians’ abilities to alter the Rider Back design, these changes will not hinder the production of the most popular gaffed cards. Undoubtedly, the Bicycle gaffs so important to magicians will remain available for years to come. “FUN will continue making Svengali, Stripper, Invisible, and various other gaffed decks on Rider backs, too,” Putnam added. “Our production methods ensure that all our trick decks meet high standards of quality. Just as importantly, is the fact that they will still be offered on the world’s most popular playing card back design,” he added. FUN will also continue producing short runs of custom-made gaffed cards on Bicycle Rider backs, a service it has provided to the magic industry for decades. The company counts many of the industry’s most creative minds among its customers, having produced trick cards for nearly every popular cardician of the last 20 years, both domestically and abroad. A wide assortment of modified faces, backs and specially designed cards are regularly produced in the company’s 50,000 square foot Chicago factory. That's actually a good news! Now, how about the old design box? Will these run out later? Or the box is still produced as some tricks can only be done using this design? Naked Angels On Bike is one of the example.
If these old design boxes will run out later, I have to start stacking up the empty box.

Anyway, I just found out that Voldermort is banned from the Café. What happened?
I was about to send him PM asking about the cheap Bike decks he mentioned before as I need the cheapest price because of the international shipping.

Not sure exactly Failed, But I believe he was talking about getting them at Costco. This is a wholesale store here in the states where you can buy items in bulk. Costco usually has a dozen decks for around $14.00. This is where I get my cards from as well.
I don't believe that they sell them through mail order though. Not sure what country you are in but, Unless you have a Costco there, I believe you may be out of luck with the Costco cards. |
