Hi
I recall seeing an effect in the Linking Ring Magazine a while back where a torn card is placed on top of a deck and with a pass of the hand the card restores. I think it was later marketed. I recall it was clever and not very complex. Does anyone recall which issue that was or the name of the marketed version? Thank you |

Alexander de Cova's Flash-Restauration was a marketed effect that does what you describe. I think it came out around 1988. Don't know if it was in Linking Ring or if it is the same one you are thinking of.

Thanks
I know the one in TLR was in mid 2000 I think |

It does sound like Alexander's Flash Restoration as Chris said, although I recall that being more a slap of the hand, than a passing of the hand. I don't recall seeing it in Linking Ring, but maybe he did a One Man Parade?

Yep, de Cova's Flash-Restauration (and that is the funky spelling on the instructions), was clearly a slap. It had to be a slap in order for the effect to work as originally described. Although with some modifications it could be done with a wave, but your hand still has to be pretty close to the deck.

I found some clips on like of the deCova method. I guess it could be the one but I recall it as a wave or the clean up to be more logical.
On line you have two versions. One using the hand and one using a card box. Neither are really fitting in exactly as I would hope. Basically in a routine I have a card torn in thirds. The tearing is not the focus of the end effect and the torn card is left on the table. Occasionally one is asked to restore it. Since the torn card is first removed from a deck. I was envisioning putting the torn pieces on the top and having them restore quickly and visually without the need for a wallet of some sort. Then it popped into my head that I saw a on the deck restoration. The videos I found on the tube showed some pretty sketchy handling of the slap. it was a bit too hard and a bit to awkward and unless sitting at a table without others on the sides, it is obvious to me and not a method I could use. The card box idea has some merit but there is still something OFF and suspect in how the box has to be slapped and there is no real logical reason to use the box. |

THIS one is a visual restoration, but doesn't involve a slap...

Thanks Joesph, this is interesting. Do you have it? Review?
The vid clip I found on line was OK. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq1rDVYP1go The load looks like it might not be able to done in tight situations since you have to tip the deck back. The shake move did not impress me too much but maybe that is due to the performance or the fact I know what is going on when someone holds a card like that. I am not so sure this one is as VISUAL since you see the BACK of the card first. That is, I think it can be confusing for the specy until you turn over their card. I think many will MISS that the card restores. I think they will feel you turned over the card and seeing the back of the face up card at first. I guess I would like this one more if the card restored face up since it does solve the slap issue. The price is right I guess |

I don't have it, but HERE is a review....
There is also another one that may fit the description HERE ...

So the "other one" seems to be Decova's method. I saw one video that gave credit to Decova showed the hand slap as well as the card box.
Note in the clip for the last one linked, it does not have audio. Assume that there is an click or thwap when the box hits the deck. My goal is to have a wave over the card but I do like the box as I mentioned in an early post since it is a little cleaner for all around situations. My other goal is to be free of a set up in the sense that if the request is made to make the card whole again, I will be ready to go. If not, I can move forward. Also the reason I mentioned this type of restoration was because I figured it was more hands off and need to dig into the pockets and it seemed I did not need to worry about how the card was torn. In my routine I have the card in thirds. It would appear I will have to tear the card again to get it to fit on the deck. I guess the only sticky part for me is why one is covering the deck and torn card with the card box. Thus why the hand is a bit nicer but I feel that method requires a clean up I care not for. (However that is why I am seeking the Linking Ring article since I thought there was a clean up that did not require one to be sitting. ) So my thought would be if there was a flash or puff of smoke then the box hits, then it takes the heat off the box. I feel what will happen is they will focus on the card and not notice you instantly show the box where it made contact. I notice they turn over the box to set it down and suspect I know why. Anyway, one thought I had was the box is used like an press iron (thus my thought of a little smoke or flash of fire) The box is helping fuse the card back. However without the SFX, just picking up the box and touching it to the deck does sort of telegraph there is something up with the box. They do not suspect the cards since they do not move and appear natural since they were handled as such. And again I suspect there is a click during the change that they left out. What to do about that. Will just assume an empty box touching the cards will make that noise? And here is confirmation to the noise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGb2Oc-U0j4&feature=related I wonder if it perfect every time or takes practice so the change looks clean. |
