I agree whole heartedly, this is not getting the attention it deserves.
You might say reality is the result of complex negotiations between the observer and the observed. But that is simply a point of view.
Many Thanks Garrad |

Think about all the money you can spend on pipedreams and half-baked ideas... but when you make a living out of performing, you have to be able to rely on things that work 100% every time. I guess, it's up to the performer to make things meaningful and sometimes even 'earth shattering' for the audience, so they care about you and what you do.
In this book, Jack is presenting routines he has done professionally, so he knows them inside out and shares a lot of details, which, to me, make all the difference. |

Where did it go off topic? Every post that I read talks about the book. Maybe my computer isn't picking up all the posts. (Hey, it could happen). LOL Ray |

DVP is wicked. It's super easy to do and is really devious!!
Effect is as follows; (for instance) "Here I have a video tape. The world cup final is on in one hour. After the match, as I don't want to spoil the surprise, we'll play this tape to prove that I KNOW who's going to win." "Why that's impossible!" "Ah, you scoff, but just wait until the tape is played!" *Match is over - Team "X" wins* "Please sir, take the tape, which you have been holding the entire time and genuinely hasn't been switched and put it into the camera/video player and press play." [Tape plays with you're face on it] "Hey guys, I predict that TEAM X will win the match!!" *Everyone collapses in awe* That's genuinely how clean it is. Amazing. DC

Nowadays its becomming harder and harder to find someone using video tapes. DVD is way more common. Think it does not need to be on a video tape does it ?

@cryder and insight
In regards to Digital Video Prediction, you are quite right: VHS tapes are pretty much obsolete these days so it certainly doesn't use one of those, it wouldn't work well with one anyway. It's called DIGITAL video prediction because it uses a digital camcorder connected to a big screen (it's an effect for stage). The tape Dee is referring to is a Mini-DV tape which is approximately the size of small matchbox; they are a popular choice for digital video recording / playback. The effect is ideal for magicians or mentalists that already use a camera during their act to enlarge their more close up work for the benefit of their audiences. It certainly won't be for everyone but I included it in the book as there are stage performers who will definitely use this. Hope that helps. @markthorold- The winner of the caption competition can be seen here: http://multiplerealities.wordpress.com/2......-winner/ Jack P.S During the past few days I have also added some more kind words to the product page from additional mentalists who have since read the book, including Paul Brook and Jheff (Jheff's Market Place of The Mind). http://www.jackcurtis.co.uk/products/distorted-thoughts/ |

So since I posted pretty early on in this thread, I thought it would be good to mention a few things now that I've had the chance to receive the book, have a proper read, and perform some stuff.
It's good - it's real good. At this point I think it's worth pointing out that I am primarily a casual performer. I perform at a few gigs a year, but it's not what I want to do. I love mentalism but don't want to be a professional mentalist - and I perform primarily in intimate situations - private parties with friends and so forth. So my opinions come from that background, if anyone cares. Anyway. Extra Subliminal Persuasion was my surprise favourite effect in the book. I'll talk about some of the other effects briefly in a sec, but this was the first one I read and tried out... To be honest, I was a bit on the fence about whether I would go ahead and try this one out after I read it. But it fits in really well with my close up set up, with what I carry, so I tried it... And it absolutely killed. Jack, you're absolutely right about the fifth option, if you know what I mean. It happened, it was picked first pick with a little bit of psychological help, and it was so strong it could've easily finished there. Just wonderful. Red Sky @ Night was also something I really enjoyed. Particularly it's the ending that makes it so good. I'm not going to use it as much as I would - simply because I've recently adopted another effect which vaguely resembles this one - but I will take every opportunity to do it casually. DVP is a great idea. Not something I'd really use but I can definitely appreciate it. H20... Brilliant. I can see why so many people have this as their favourite effect from the book. I will simply say this: for me personally, being a casual performer, and therefore working mostly impromptu, it's a slight annoyance to perform. But, for any strolling performer, especially at restaurants... Put it this way - if I was working at a restaurant, this would be my routine closer. Because I perform casually, I can't predict when my performances are, and therefore preparing for them is a hassle - so I won't perform it as much. But, anytime I know I'll be performing, you bet I'll be putting this in! Just brilliant. A wonderful combination of methods - nothing new, but I think the premise is just great. It feels realistic and natural. Blank - not really for me, is all I'll say about it. I do use a regular deck, and can't really be bothered carrying two. Some will like it and use it, though, if you don't mind that. Law of Attraction - note to self. Make some business cards so that you can perform this thing. Next. Essays - wonderful, wonderful thoughts. I can't speak highly enough about Jack's two essays. Won't tip too much here, but it's basically what it says, and the thoughts are worth every minute of your time it takes to read them. Overall, one of my favourite purchases this year - perhaps a close third. Finding one effect I immediately started performing made the book worth it. In addition, I now have two more effects I will perform whenever I can, another effect I'd like to try, and a book full of wonderful ideas and thoughts that are great to know. Thank you Jack - I loved it. |
