Sometimes, the props I enjoy the most are afterthoughts in other orders. I recently replaced my old table top and, while I was at it, bought a Royal Magic Coin Funnel.
This may well be an old prop, but I hadn't seen it done before. The more I work with it, the more I'm enjoying it. The funnel itself is nicely made, heavy and solid in your hand with a perfect finish. The half dollar sits cleanly and convincingly in the bottom half when unscrewed. The more I work with the the more I enjoy it. It does take developing a "touch" for but with a bit of practice it does what it does consistently and reliably. The routine that comes with it is adequate but uninspired. I've developed my own routine based on a theme of a lecture on the workings of "thin air" that I'm fairly proud of. Eventually I'll get a video up. Using it cleanly does require some very basic coin slight skills, but if you can do a passable finger palm you won't need much more. All in all I think this is a great prop. Simple, deceptive, and just fun to use.

So it occurs to me I didn't actually tell you what it does
The effect is that the hollow tube is blocked by a half dollar that is securely locked in the middle. Quarters are then dropped through the tube and, with a nice magical clinking sound, pass through the half dollar and emerge out the bottom. Tube, half dollars and quarters are all examinable before and after. (Though my paranoid nature recommends you hand out the tube and half dollar to examine *before* the routine so they have no inkling of what they might be looking for. Also, I hand the tube out unscrewed as two pieces. If you wanted to be *really* paranoid, split the tube and half dollar up among two or three spectators to examine, but I'm sure that's over-kill.)

I'm not sure if your version comes with this in the instructions, but don't forget Al Cohen's final load idea, where at the conclusion of the routine something is "blocking" the coins from penetrating the half dollar. You lift up the tube and a large battery rolls out. "Oh, I forgot to change the battery."
Maybe not your style, but it's a surprising bit of business.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

It did mention the battery, though it didn't credit Al Cohen :/

It is great and ended up having this mini collection of tubes - Mikame's wood tube that uses a dollar in place of the coin in the middle, a quarter and a penny tube. Yea, I think your on to something that old props will be coming back because these are classics.
The tube should be very comfortable if one has handled an okito box especially with the same gaffing. |

Magic is cyclic. The tricks that people have forgotten are fertile ground for rediscovery.

This is a great surprising coin penetration effect. The surprise climax is right up there with the Cups & Balls and Chop Cup kind of climaxes. It is a full routine and not like a lot of the current junk on the market.
It is simple to carry and does deliver the a punch! I would not reall call this old magic. It is within the last 20 or so years and to me that means it is still a new idea. I am glad Fun Inc. picked up and kept this on the market. Cyberqat, you made an excellent choice to complete your order. Have Fun! |

I recently added one of these to my order similar to what the OP did. I had never heard of it before nor had I seen it performed.
It's a pretty cool little prop. Can be kind of noisy but I'm hoping sufficient practice will eliminate that. A bargain at the price. I'm surprised more mention isn't made of it. You can even perform a final load like a chop cup. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S8083 |

Videoman, thanks for bringing this old thread back up so I could see it and get inspiration! I think it's a nice trick, and since I like to design and make my own props, I made my own:
http://themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic......forum=26 I made it to take my local currency of course, since all the commercial versions I've seen uses US coins (which isn't easily accessible where I live). |

I just recently purchased one of the marketed aluminum versions. But I like yours. It looks great and it's cool that you could custom make it to fit your coins.
It's also nice that your coins have holes in them. I started doing my routine with a Chinese coin the size of a half dollar rather than a half dollar because I liked the idea of apparently passing through the small hole in the center of the Chinese coin. Plus, it opens up more possibilities for stories. You did a really excellent job making yours! Nice work! |

Does anyone have a good routine to use with this prop? Any links to instructional videos or ebooks/papers would be appreciated (just PM me).

Solid thru solid. Battery operated. What better is there?

I believe I know how it goes, but there's one part I have issues with, and that's how to justify not throwing the last coin into the funnel (since it has been pocketed and exchanged for the battery). If the initial premise was to get coins to penetrate the solid, then suddenly you're supposed to drop an invisible coin into the funnel instead? |

I have found that after the battery is shown, the misdirection is so great, I load a second battery. Have really fooled some magi with that.

I recently purchased the Mikame coin tube but the instructions are in Japanese. There are photos that give me the basic idea but I was wondering if anyone could point me to an English translation to see what I am missing.

I recently purchased the Coin Funnel and I love the effect. My one concern and I realize this may be a lack of practice on my part, is that sometimes, the hidden coin falls out of the tube when I reverse it prematurely. Any suggestions as to how to prevent this would be appreciated. Thank you.

I started using a triangular shaped close up pad to perform on. It serves two purposes.
1. Quiet the sound. 2. Talk about the bermuda triangle. You can carry it in your pocket just about. |
