I'll be honest John: Im entirely new to your work. I do know, however, that you are known for practical and strong card work. I was looking at the table of contents of One Degree (which I will soon purchase) and was intriuged by Solo. What makes solo different from any other open travlers? Does it have a "one degree" touch?
Also, how to you approach creating your own magic? Where does your creativity come from? With Thanks, Andrew (Your Thinking Cap) |

Nice to meet you, Andrew.
Solo is my take on Open Travelers. I've been captivated by the plot for many years. The stickiest part in most versions I’ve seen is the dreaded last card and the necessity to bring it back to the deck. With Solo, I offer a solution where the cards never come in contact with the deck. To the audience, only four cards are undoubtedly in play. This effect offers three things worthy of your consideration: 1) a novel answer to the last card; 2) very clean and deceptive displays; and 3) a memorable visual that heightens the impact! There was a nice review of the book elsewhere on the Café, where Rich Morrell shared a little about Solo in his comments. See: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......m=110&16 As far as my creativity, it comes from everywhere. Asking the "What If?" question is a big thing for me. I LISTEN to people all around me, eavesdrop, window shop at odd shops, and read a lot about magic for inspiration. John G

Hey Guys,
John is being a little coy. He doesn't just eavesdrop on people, he actually carries around an electronic hearing aid to listen in on people's conversations from farther away. He's used it several times when we've hung out. No joke! When you meet him, ask him to tell you the story of why he bought the gizmo in the first place. Not to spoil the ending for you, but it involves him trying to get too close to listen in on a woman's conversation at a Café and then him getting kicked out because she thought he was trying to smell her hair! Oh man, it's a priceless story. Get him to tell it to you if you ever meet him. It just goes to show that John's creativity knows no bounds. Tyler Wilson |
