Hi all, I'm mostly a card guy with a pinch of coins. However, for my girlfriend's birthday I'd like to magically produce a rose for her - thought it would substitute for me being a hopeless romantic!
So, any pointers on how I can do this (perhaps PM me please?) or where I can learn how to, will be appreciated! btw - I'm not sure what forum this shoud have gone in, but I hope this is suitable. Thanks.

Real roses don't hold up to 'handling' very well. They are living flowers and the stems have thorns. You can do a lot more with a thoughful card and some creativity.
If you were to take some tissue paper and create a 'rose' for her, and sneak some rose perfume onto it so it would then have a scent...

Ah thanks. I can see how a real rose could be a problem, but even with a fake rose, I'm unsure of a production. So far all I've thought about is King Soloman's Drink for AoA#2.

Looks like there's a rose production on the Flicking Fingers' DVD. Might be worth checking out.

I have always liked Kevin James' 'Floating Rose'!!! It has al ot of magic in it, and in the end a real rose to give to someone special.

Check out some stuff by Rocco. He's into that rose producing stuff, and he has a lot more miracles.

I know that Monty (in Hawaii) does a lot of rose magic and even sells a Rose Magic video, I think. His website is http://montysmagic.com/.
I have never seen him perform, but I have met him at conventions and he seems like a nice guy. I think he even posts here from time to time. Amos McCormick

I remember seeing something years ago where you change a tissue into a rose. If you form your hand into a fist and push the centre of the tissue (obviously the colour of the real rose) into the top of the fist, the edges will bunch up, and look exactly the same as if you take a rose and bunch the petals up in your hand.
Using a TT you can put the tissue into your hand, steal, and it still looks as though the tissue is there. Hope that made sense. |

As psherman states, there's a VERY good rose production on the Flicking Fingers' DVD, which is part of a purse frame routine. If you already do a purse frame routine, you could easily add this, assuming you wear a jacket.

Karrell Fox did the tissue to rose but I can't recall which book it was in.

Look at Derren Brown's 'The Devil's Picture Book". There is a routine with rose petals that will get you in bed at 8 and home by 11...

I will do it quickly but, I will leave out the ending so I can surprise you if you get the video.
Effect: Derren asks a spectator to select a card and put it back into the deck. He then vanishes the deck (no table lap) but, one card. The card isn't the spectator's so Derren puts it in his pocket and on the off beat he produces another card and this goes on for a long time. Then Derren asks the lady what was her card and she tells him. Then something happens but, I am not going to tell you... This whole routine fooled me and his use of shuttle passing cards is completely invisible. Lee |

GregB, did you find anything interesting? My girlfriend's birthday is in 2 weeks and I'd really like to do something magical and romantic for her.

1) David Stone has a rose production is his 'X-Rated' lecture notes.
2) Stefan Kirschbaum has a routine which climax's with a rose production, which can be found in 'The Book' (flicking fingers) aswell as their new DVD. 3) Kevin James' 'Floating Rose'. 4) Monty has a DVD dedicated to Rose manipulation, which teaches different ways or producing, vanishing, floating roses. 5) There used to be an 'Appearing Rose', which was like a colapsable fake rose and looked great with a bit of flash paper, or from beneath a silk. It was more suited for stage though. However, seeing as though you are more of a card guy, there are many card effects which have a romantic theme to them, 'anniversary waltz', 'hey there baby cakes' (paul Harris) etc etc... In fact, I remember reading somewhere that there is a whole manuscript on romantic themed magic effects. Anyway, good luck with it... JOnathaN =) |

Kevin James' Floating Rose is really great. Even David Copperfield used this. I think that there are also small hand-held Match to Flower effects on the market. With quick work, the carnation provided could easily be changed over to a rose...

Talking of Kevin James, i had the pleasure of meeting him in a master class I to with Jeff McBride, He gave us his new video where he has a variation of a topit that would work perfectly for a rose produccion, or you can of course get his floating rose video.
