Banachek, Max Maven, Bob Cassidy, David Berglas, Derren Brown, add your favorite Mentalist, etc.
What makes these guys great? Is it the methods they know? Is it all the shiny gimmicks they own? Is it presentation? Character? Etc. Whats your thoughts |

These guys are perfectionists!
They won't do an effect live until it shines; until they're happy with it J.

They are willing to "pay the price" by doing things the rest of us are unwilling to do.

Banachek is awesome for being a total amature and then proceeding to invent better stuff than all the Mentalists actually already had!
Derren Brown is famous because he is very talented and entertaining, aswell as convincing. Everyone I know believes him to have psychological abilities.

To answer Cozmo's question, the folks he named are great because they didn't waste time searching the Internet for the latest new effect that would make them a star. Instead, they studied not only the rich history and literature of our craft but the psychology of perception and cognition, devoted years of practice mastering, perfecting and often improving upon the classic methodology, developing their own unique persona and honing their technical and presentational skills before "going public." They gained the knowledge and experience that enabled them to understand the being able to "DO" and effect is NOT the same as being able to "PERFORM" it. If one doesn't recognize and is unable to explain the difference between "doing" and "performing" is one who has a long road ahead of them before they have any business even contemplating strutting their stuff for anyone other than their immediate family, a few close friends, or their pals at the local magic club.
Harsh words perhaps, but ones that few are willing to voice, fewer still are inclined to heed, but that nevertheless are worth repeating.

What I disagree with Eshla's statement is that he hadn't invented better stuff than all the mentalists actually had, he created material that fit him and his needs. With few exceptions, nothing is better or worse than anything else. |

Because they spent all their time on the Café debating why other mentalists are great.

To clarify, what I meant was:
"Banachek is awesome because he was a total amature at one point, and then grew (threw his own abilities) to be the best of the best! That I can respect!" Banacheck is ofcourse not an amature now, he is debatably the best Mentalist living, but the backround he comes from makes it all the more extordinary. He didn't have Harry Blackstone Sr. for a dad, he was on his own. /respect

I recently bought a new kitchen and the guy who installed the kitchen is really great. It took him three weeks (he also did the ceiling of the kitchen and several electrical things and other home improvements). Why is he great? Because he knows what he's doing, he's committed to the product, he's... he IS a kitchen.
Every great guy IS the thing he does. He's not only doing it, no, he IS it. Those mentalists ARE mentalism.
