Having seen many of the videos from individuals on this site (Bone and Oz come to mind), I am interested in learning the card spin. To me it appears very simple, in reality, I am experiencing great difficulty in actually getting the card to spin. I know the rate of spin is controlled with pressure from the thumb and finger, but what gets the bloody thing spinning in the first place?
Any directions, or references would be appreciated! |

The card spin is actually very easy to do.
I've been practicing this flourish for about 2 weeks and I can do it consistently now. The only two pieces of advice that I can give you is, 1) Your thumb. IMMEDIATELY lift up your thumb when your index finger starts the spin. The thumb is usually the cause of the spin not working. 2) Balance the card well on your middle finger. I find that moist hands eliminate this problem. Other than that? Practice, practice and practice and self-experiment. You will get it sooner or later. I basically learned this pirouette move myself. I didn't learn it from any book. I watched other performers doing it and duplicated the action. It was really funny... I started out by using my ring finger to start the spin until I realized I was wrong then I used my index finger. |

For starting the spin a light touch with the index finger does the trick and it also helps if you move the index finger forward slightly before you pull back.

I tried to learn this for about a week with no progress. I left it and said it was impossible. I then watched a Derren Brown video a month or two later and he was doing it. I remembered how good it looked and told myself I would do it. On my first time I could do it. My advice is, practice for a bit, leave it, then practice a bit more. Good luck with it any way mate.

Card spins are a lot of fun, I have seen people spin cards on their first, and middle fingers, I can spin a card for up to a minute and longer, using Jerry Cestkowski paddiddle. If your going to learn a spin, that's the one to learn.

I learned to spin on my middle finger using the index finger to get it started, but where can I find out more information on the Jerry Cestkowski paddiddle?

He teaches it in his book the Encyclopedia of Playing Card Flourishes, you can get it at http://www.flourishman.com
I don't want to explain it over the net, because the people at superhandz might get really mad, but if you e-mail him, he might explain it, he gave me some tips, also there is a video of it on Xtreme 2. On the http://www.superhandz.com it shows how to keep it going. dominic |

Thanks to everyone who had some advice to offer.
I want to learn to do this also. Sometimes it is best to just stop and return to it later, when learning all kinds of various moves or sleights. You can't let yourself get too discouraged or give up on something too soon. GlenD

The advice on this thread has been extremely helpful as I have just received Card College 4 the other day and I am trying to learn this move. A question though; I've found the advice of moving the index finger forward slightly before pulling back to be really helpful. When you move the index finger forward slightly do you keep pressure on the card or do you only touch the card when you are moving back to start the spin?
I've found it easier if pressure is applied to the card throughout but it seems that the move looks better if the card is only seen moving in one direction. It's easier to do that initial move but hopefully I'll get it where I won't need it. |

Dominic, No need to tip it here and risk anyone getting mad. I don't remember reading it in, "The Encyclopedia of Playing Card Flourishes," but I will check there with I get home! Thanks!

Yeah, I personally do it differently than he does it. His spins on the first finger. For mine I use the exact same method to keep the spin moving, but I do it on my middle.

Yeah I just go the move right and able to start the spin on my middle finger now! The only problem now is the balance of the card, it still always slip off and falls. I guess I just need more practice.

You'll get the feel of it. Just keep practicing putting the card in different places on your finger until you find the right place to start.

On super handz instead of stopping after a couple of second of sping they continue by slightly spinning their finger
