Each of these performers made it through originally by performing their own material. As the judges asked for more, they were able to deliver because of help from their friends. I don't see anything wrong with this at all. |

On "American Idol", the finalists receive ongoing help from well known professional singers and composers how to improve their individual performances, even making suggestions as how a particular lyric should be delivered or paced, etc.. Not to mention they can pick up a full orchestra, band and back up singers to assist in their next presentation...

Lets face it is rigged, buy comparing vote results to help who they want to put through. Why wasn't the little girl opera singer matched against the competing male opera singer.
How can you campare and pick from apples, oranges, peaches, pears, bananas, when all you desire is apples. Therefore, you do not consider anything else. Same goes for the AGT show. It is just a waste of time even viewing the show. So their touring show will have what 4 singing acts. They should not have any singers on the show, singers are not in the catagory of variety acts. |

Matthew, thanks for clearing that up. I must have assumed that you were talking about creating tricks. Looking back, it looks like the issue that you had was that he had to borrow some props, or have them made for him for the show, or whatever...
IMHO, You are still wrong. Again, not your short sighted opinion, but your analogy. During the contest, a singer is encouraged to try new things, new songs, arrange songs in a new way, and play with new magicians. I believe that a magician shoud be encoraged to do the same. I had a cover band gig a few months ago, and we guessed the audience wrong. We thought it was going to be a laid back gig (musical wallpaper) with people chatting and talking while we played background music. Our setlist reflected that line of thinking, and was put together to be enjoyable, but also allow people to talk. Well, our thinking couldn't have been further from the truth, by the 2nd or third song, it was clear that everyone there wanted to dance. We adjusted our set list on the fly, and played what the audience wanted to hear. Worked out really well and we had a really good night (and received some great referrals). Some other nights, the original set list would have been what the audience wanted. We played what the audience wanted to hear. We figured it out and put together something for the target audience. Every single contestant who made it to the top 10 in AGT did that as well. Figured out what the viewers wanted and gave it to them. It's as cut and dry as that. Just like my cover band gigs, every gig is different. What works for AGT TV audience may not work for a birthday party, or even a vegas show for that matter. I am convinced that I can't change your y of thinking. Noone can change the opinion of an antagonist. I am unlikely to butt in again on this topic. |

Sorry Matt,
you know I kinda wish that was the case too in some aspects. I wish that magicians could take their own acts that they had been honing for years. The quality of magic would be very high if that were the case. But unfortunatly I think that most magicians have performed longer sets and smaller scale effects than AGT wants. So, in order to compete some magicians need to compensate. I don't mean to down play your opinion but I do think that Murray and Grasso put their own spin on their illusions and did a good job of making them their own. |

This whole idea of originality has to be put into perspective when we perform. We all borrow something from somewhere. Every time you do a double lift, a French drop or a Mora vanish, you're essentially "borrowing" the work of someone else to enhance your own presentation. Nothing wrong with that, and there's nothing wrong with borrowing an illusion to demonstrate that you are a qualified and talented performer. Grasso is clearly talented and he did what any smart performer and businessman would do to showcase his abilities, and he did it with class.

Hey, that BA conversation is pretty interesting. I don't think that what they are doing is magic. Magical yes. But not magic. But even after they turn on the lights my family still goes. How did they do that? They are using the principle, which is very well known (every Halloween spook alley, and high school play director has said to themselves at some point hey we should add some black light here to make it look like our hands are floating),in a very artistic way.
Also I'm pretty sure in years past (Maybe it was Restivo) magicians have used the BA principle in their acts in AGT. The way that the principle is used is much different though. Any of us could fool most our friends with a do after I do card trick intermediately after we explain the key card principle. |
