I think that the change is very visual...however, the "after" I think looks like crap! Very unnatural hand movements, and its quite obvious that something is being concealed.
I'm not so concerned about the "not being able to hand it out" part as I do Extreme Burn and never pass out the bills to be examined before or after and everything flys smooth. This just looks very unnatural to my eyes...AFTER the change.

Looks cool. It reminds me of a bill change Danny Garcia did.

This could be great to follow up with a quick multi-bill production with the Cash Out trick. Looking forward to it! Any reviews would be great.

Looks great on video...that's undisputably visual. While comments about handing it out have been made; may I ask if I have to set up ahead of being in front of my spectators and walk out holding that blank piece of paper or can I reach into my pocket empty handed, remove whatever and begin. The demo never shows his hands without the paper.

If you do Extreme burn, why would you want to do this first? Seems a bit like an anti-climax. They know you are going to change the bills now, so no suprise. I will stick with Extreme burn. Ain't broke, don't fix.

Personally, I wouldn't use this trailer as the example. If the hand movements seem artificial or unnatural (as I agree they do), then you have a project on your hands. I immediately noticed I didn't care for the handling on that video, but bought it anyway, because I'm sure I can change the moment to fit my personal style since I'm sure I won't be able to change the method.
Likewise, I used to tell people about a DVD called Bare Handed by Kirk Kokinios. Kirk has some of the most brilliant ideas on his video, but his handling seemed unnatural and contrived. But the resourceful professional can easily adapt his handlings to fit his own style and make Kirks magic look like a miracle. I think the same will be true of the Kartis Change.....

The transformation itself looks pretty good. It reminds me of the Gene Anderson flash newspaper restoration. Does the "necessary" permit one to hand out the item? The video clip suggested a few ideas for routines. One where you offer them a piece of psychic paper for four quarters and one where you make their bill change places with your slip of paper.
My observation is simply this - you have your hand out just after the magic happens and they will want to touch the item - a common and perhaps even instinctive response to such experiences. What then?

Dare I say... this is a typical example of what is wrong with magic and promo videos. So many magic videos reduce magic to an instant.
Nobody can dispute that the moment of magic looks great. However, as has been noted, the video does not show how you introduce it. How easy is it to get into position? You can see this on so many demo videos and it does the consumer a huge injustice. The handling on this looks very unnatural and I think people will definitely notice something is amiss. They may well not say anything but they'll know. More than likely, it will lead them to ask to see the money. it won't be because they are amazed but they know they will be able to find out how it works. I agree with Eric. As an *effect* it is really good but as a *routine* it needs work. The presentation you give it and the dressing to go round the effect will turn it into something amazing. You also have to ask yourself what you will do and/or say when people ask to look at the note. I don't think you should assume that putting it away and bringing out another one will do.

What do you do when people ask to see the deck and it's a Svengali? Because of that possibility, MANY will not use a Svengali. Yet, it can be a deadly piece of magic in a Professional Magician's arsenal.
We'll have to see reviews on the Kartis DVD to see if they go over handling that situation. They may not. But if the effect is uable, then it would be worth routining to solve that issue, as you would with other 'non examinable magic".

I love using the Svengali deck and I have easily routined it into my effects. I ca switch back and forth from a gaffed deck to a normal deck with no one really catching on. I would assume that you could switch the bill out the same as you would a gaffed deck for examination. I am curious as how you get into the routine. If you can walk up to someone and take the paper out of your wallet or pocket and do the effect this might be very nice to have. However, if you need to have the paper in your hands "set up" before introducing this to a spec then it would have too many limitations for me.
I'm truly looking forward to a good review on this one. It's too visual to walk away from!!!! Mike |

Personally, I would never use a Svengali deck in such a way that it encourages people to want to examine it. If you show all the cards the same at the end of the routine (or the middle) people will want to take a look at the deck. However, if you do a routine that makes it seem like a regular deck (or if you have switched in in for a regular deck that was shown earlier) then people will probably not want to look at it. It's all in the way a gimmicked item is handled and/or presented.
What would anyone here think if they saw a blank piece of paper instantly and visibly change right in front of them? I would think everyone would at the very least be looking mightily close at it. I also think everyone would want to be given the chance to hold such in incredible item. I wonder if people are blinded by an effect and just want to know the secret.

If you can run the change in reverse, it might be a killer way to use something like Kohler's new box item. They take out a bill, read off the serial number, give you the bill, you talk about people seeing what they wish to see and suddenly the bill is a blank slip of paper. You then find their bill in that box you put on the table earlier.

I'd like to be able to start with a $1 bill, shake it, and have it turn into a blank piece of paper with shower of 100 pennies falling out.

Oops, too late to edit. I meant to add that the other hand could retrieve the pennies using a coin dropper such as that used in the Ireland 50-Cent Trick.

Apart from the way he handled the bill, it's a good and visual effect. However, the way he handled it, it will put more heat on the bill itself.
We gotta ask defconskylude as he said he was getting it from Penguin.
