I try not to use balloon twisting in my shows. However, occasionally, I have an effect using them or use them as a reward for smaller children. Years ago, I saw a great gag where a balloon was stretched between the performer and the child and it looked as though the child was blowing up the balloon from his end. Does anyone know how to prepare the balloon for this? I sometimes incorporate Jeff McBrides balloon routine, and this works great for adults. The cildren just prefer the viual sight gags more.

Hi Christopher:
I believe I saw Pat Page do this gag on his children's video. You stretch out the end of the balloon only - the end opposite the nozel. The balloon will then blow up backwards - towards you. Ron Reid |

Thanks Ron. I will give it a try. It's a great gag, I just want to be sure that it will actually work every time.
Thanks Again. |

A nearly normal tip to increase your % is to
1. stretch out the balloon in the middle. 2. Blow it up a time or two prior to your show. A fun line I use is to blow the balloon up the usual way, then tell the audience that I fibbed to them when I said I was going to blow the balloon up. I say, I really blew the balloon down. Then have the air come up toward you. Another gag is to blow it up from the other end. This involves drawing in air and forming a bubble in the balloon. The bubble will be inside your mouth. Close the end with the hole and gently bite down sending the air into the middle of the balloon. Enjoy sharing the magic while connecting with your audiences. As Mr. Goshman said, The magic is YOU! Thank Dennis for the great link. I also like Harris's information about prepping the balloon prior to the performance. that should certainly make it easier and more consistent.

I love doing balloon shows! Few props to carry, easy to do, lots of opportunities for gags and comedy, and the kids have a blast!
I have a whole balloon show that I do, which was very popular with libraries during their "Be Creative" theme season. I teach every child how to make a simple balloon dog which they can take home with them. I'll be presenting a lecture at the Kapital Kidvention in late January 2010 detailing my balloon show and how I can make 100 balloons an hour with nobody standing in line. I also have a chapter on balloons in my book "Kids Think It's Funny". The link is in my signature |

That Steve Martin video is great, I'd forgotten how funny that balloon routine was. I especially love the balloon stuck on the mic stand.
