So
So, it is widely believed that the recent ascendancy of "so" began in Silicon Valley. The journalist Michael Lewis picked it up when researching his 1999 book The New New Thing: "When a computer programmer answers a question," he wrote, "he often begins with the word 'so.'" Microsoft employees have long argued that the "so" boom began with them. ... This logical tinge to "so" has followed it out of software. Starting a sentence with "so" uses the whiff of logic to relay authority. Where "well" vacillates, "so" declaims. http://www.boingboing.net/2010/06/17/ori......-so.html So

News to me. Has anyone here noticed more use of "so" than in the past?

Somehow, I don't think this use of "so" is anything to do with programmer usage. So you think you learned something new today?

I never thought of it but being a Silicon Valley guy I'd say it is true, those techies use the word 'So' to start their explainations all the time.

I sure have noticed the over use of "So" to start a sentence, especially among Scientists on NPR, like on Science Friday. There is also a lot of finishing a sentence with "If that makes sense " in this group. I still listen.

Any high school shop class back in the day (for me the '70s) would have used 'So' a lot. "So, your boardfoot tells you what the cost of materials....blah blah blah."

So, I think I did the right thing in posting that because that's pretty much what I recall from those days.
