Just curious if any of you have attended, taught in or had your children in a Steiner/Waldorf program. And if so, what do you think of it now.
I've been vaguely aware of the program for years, but have only recently done some deeper reading. And I'd love to get some first-hand views. John

I've never heard of such a thing until your post. I was looking on wikipedia and it certainly seems like Waldorf/Steiner schools make some extreme deviations from the typical school systems. In my opinion, we need some similar deviations in the states...

Nothing of any interest to add, although that won't stop me posting, naturally. The closest I've got is having a friend who teaches in one, and having visited the Goetheanum in Dornach in Switzerland which is a classic of Expressionist architecture, for anyone interested and who happens to be near there.

They are a load of guff. I'd stay well clear if you can at all help it. Here is an article that I remember from a year or so ago. There are plenty of others sticking the boot in:

I'm familiar with the literature; I'm just curious to see if anyone experienced it first hand. What Steiner preached and what goes on in the schools might be very different.
Thanks for the link, Davit. John

I asked the retired teacher wife. She said that as a pure teaching method is isn't good and neither is that one out of Italy but bits and pieces are already used in classrooms and always have been.

John,
Thanks for the interesting question. There was a very active Waldorf school near our neighborhood decades ago when I was living on the East Coast. I remember taking a tour of it, and admiring the sponge-painted walls. I don't think I knew any of the teachers or any of the families that supported it by sending their children to it, however. Although I am quite interested in Rudolf Steiner's work, I have no direct experience of the schools he founded/inspired. It would be a case of pas lu, pas vu, mais entendu parler . . . Woland |

In terms of architectural theory - very interesting. In terms of education, I wouldn't / didn't send my son there

I played basketball against a steiner team once.

Quite a while ago I heard that Waldorf Schools were hard to perform for because the kids were uncontrolled. This guy had a good show but he said the kids were horrible.
I performed for a couple (back then ) and found the kids to be wonderful, curious and fun. This is saying a lot for those kids because my show was not as strong as now and they were still great. I think the Schools must have varied a lot, back then at least. I have had no recent experience. - Mary Mowder |
