I ordered a thumb tip the other day, and got what was supposed to be a cool combo set, one for the thumb and one for a finger. The problem was neither of them fit my hand (and I have skinny fingers.)
Who has bought a thumb tip you have been very satisfied with, for size, and for matching of skin color? And may I ask where you ordered it? Thank you. Click |

The thing is, I have been very satisfied with the Vernet. I use the hard one for bill switches (less friction), and the soft ones for such things as salt vanishes. Is it a perfect match for my skin tone? No, but that really doesn't matter. Just about every magic dealer carries these.

Hi Clark -
I'm assuming because this is your first post that you are new to magic. Or at least new around here. Welcome. Typically, a thumb tip need not be very close to your skin color as the audience should never have a good look at it. Further, it should not fit over the thumb but rather rest on it so that it can be easily removed and replaced. Hope that makes sense. Unless something is really far off here, I'm guessing that you can use what you have purchased just fine once you have some instruction with it. I would ask the magician who sold it to you for a little lesson, if it was purchased at a local magic shop. If it was purchased on-line, it may be a bit harder to get some handling tips. Maybe there are some on-line vids you could track down? Best of luck! |

Denny's in Las Vegas has one brand that I find the best. It is just a bit softer than the Vernet and the finish is not as smooth and plastic-y. Very nice, I get a half-dozen every time I'm there. I would assume the other store would also have them.

Only until I went to a lecture years ago by the late Cellini did I realize that the thumb tip could be bright red if handled properly and it wouldn't matter. He gave a great lecture but the majority of the magicians asked him a lot of questions on his handling and loading of the thumb tip.
His lecture was incredible and covered a lot of good things but I find it amazing that I always remember his handling of the thumb tip. Steve |

In a similar vein to what Steve wrote, several years back while visiting Tony Girard who owns The Timid Rabbit magic shop in Kalamazoo, Michigan, he gave me a lesson on TT when I asked a similar question about which kind are best, color matching to skin, etc. After doing a handful of effects, he showed the TT he had been using with me. It was fluorescent green. Misdirection is not to be underestimated.

Thanks, guys. You guys are cool. Thanks for all the tips and comments, and suggestions. Actually, I'm not what you'd call new to magic (see May Soon Go Public under New Arrivals.) I had a thumb tip years ago and lost it. But recently I purchased a video of a guy demonstrating a TT abd was blown away by the simplicity and confidence with which this man worked. I liked the TT he was using and did not know who on line to order one from (there are no magic shops in my town.) The one I did order was fromn a shop on ebay, and it is a very thick-walled, obvious looking thing that sticks out like a sore thumb (ooh, sorry) and is probably for a child, because it would just barely fit over just the bare tip of my thumb (nowhere near the first knuckle.) Armed with this new info, though, I can get a much better one I'll actually use. Thanks again! -Click-

See if you can use it on your middle finger, as a finger tip. The results are the same, and it can be more deceptive.

A similar answer to David and Steve. I am still somewhat a 'newbie'
when I got my first Tip, I went to a magic shop to ask if they have any more which are a bit more realistic....it is at that moment when I was taught a good lesson, the guy in the shop also did some tricks for me.....HE had a bright pink/camo style tip! I learned a good lesson that day! |

The Café's own Tom Lauten, (mostly found in the "Penny for your Thoughts" section) who does special fx for movies, used to produce custom-made thumb tips that look as close to the real thing as you can get. I don't know if he's still in the TT biz, however.

Yes I agree. Vernet is the best I know of.
Here are some tips: You can adjust the size of the hard vernet ones to some degree. Put it in hot water it'll soften so you can shape it a little (Stretch or squeeze). I have thin fingers so I put mine in a glass or water then microwave it to heat the water up. I start at one minute. Check to see if it's a little soft. If it isn't hot enough I put it in another 20 seconds or so and so on. WARNING: It can get pretty hot. Don't put it on your thump when it's hot. And don't over stretch or squeeze it. And most importantly, don't blame me if you mess it up beyond repair. LOL It's hard to do though. Don't worry about it matching your skin color all that much. Sure, you want it to match as best you can but don't spend to much time and effort finding one that matches exactly. It's not that crucial. If you go to any magic conventions be sure to go to the dealers room. There are usually dealers that have boxes of them in different sizes, colors and out of different materials and from different manufacturers. If you find one there that is really good for you. Get the ball rolling with the dealer so you'll know where to get more. They might offer to supply to you themselves. Or they might tell you what brand it is so you can contact them. I hope that helps. Ron Jaxon |

2 points - a) what was the DVD you liked and b) I agree with Ron think that for this than can be no better way than going to a shop/convention and trying a few.

I vote for Vernet. I always carry one with me.
If I may add my experience. My first introduction to magic as a teen, many years ago, was a TT/silk vanish demo at a magic shop. I liked the effect, but was not convinced that I could conceal it, and then the demonstrator repeated and had been performing with a shiny chrome TT. I will never forget that important lesson in misdirection. Enjoy sharing your magic. cheaha bill

I found that the people are simply not looking or even thinking of such a gimmick, so it's invisible to them.
