Has anyone checked out the new Sheridan manipulation DVD? It has a lot of stuff from Jeff's AoCM, but it still sounds good. For those who don't know, it is 35 bucks from hocus-pocus.

Sheridan is the one who taught McBride. I don't think it will do you much good if you have AoCM.

Oh yes it will. It covers HIS interlock, HIS production and the rarely seen sidegrip productions. He has a lot of original productions that would make great additions to any card routine.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to pick it up. When I do I'll give a little review too.

Wow, I might have to get it because my AoCM vol 2 is gone. It has these huge cracks in it.

I received all 4 volumes. I know he's considered the father of street magic, but these DVD's fall flat. He produces a card fan and the L&L audience cheers like he walked on water.
I found the work to be dull. Not that you can't learn great magic from it - you can. But I like to be entertained along with the audience like the BIll Malone DVD's. Just my opinion. Chris

Would his manipulation DVD be good in place of McBride's videos?

No, it would be a good supplement. Check out my reviews, it talks all about this.

I watched parts of the DVDs at the Magic Castle library the other night, and I was really surprised. I think Jeff Sheridan has done some great stuff (his ideas for the Geneva Prediction Watch are really innovative). But on the DVDs the material seems flat and his presentation flatter.
I found myself fidgeting during long procedure, monotone delivery, and plodding pace. Maybe some of the material is good. I didn't watch all the DVDs. Cheers, Jerry |

Jeff states, however, that he is a silent performer, and is unused to patter.

zombieboy, that's a good point. He's perfect in that venue.

I have only seen Vol 1 and was quite disappointed.
For me there was nothing of value explained that hasn't been covered elsewhere many times and better. His card manipulation I did find impressive, and his handling of the spectator for such. So Vol. 2 might be of some value. The performance of the watch trick with which he opened, one could only guess what was going on from the video or what he trick was supposed to be. I was really looking forward to more stage presence in these segments from him.

If he's used to performing silently with material, why on earth would L&L make him go out of his element? To see a four-set of DVDs rather than one? Seems like it. I wonder what the editors at L&L were thinking when they were reviewing this. As a lot of people have said, it falls a bit flat. I found a few things of value, but nothing to justify four DVDs worth.

These are every poor. I feel sorry for the L&L audience having to pretend they are being amazed. As least this fellow wasn't just showcasing his poor marketed effects like Henry Evans.
If it weren't for the Malone series, I'd start worrying about L&L. Chris

Well, as one of that audience so blessed as to see Sheridan work live let me tell you...
He does work silent. In that respect he is unequalled. His Street Act is absolutely brilliant. It engages an audience and develops a character through studied and tested techniques. Something totally unique happened on these DVDs as a result of the silent medium. There is something hidden in these DVDs which is rarely seen in magic. It is hiding in plain view on every one of them. In the descriptions of the methods, when Jeff is explaining how to do the tricks, his inner dialogue is playing in the background. At almost every point in this set of DVDs Jeff, sometimes unconsciously, often times very consciously, audiblizes the inner dialogue he uses when performing. This dialogue is what gives his act the punctuation it has. Cards don't just come into view they magically appear, popping into view with punctuation. That frames the magical moment and gives Sheridan that crispness which most manipulatrors lack. It is a theory applied to many things including space object work in Improvised Theater and even fencing. My fencing maestro, Arthur Lane, teaches using this technique. Actions and even half actions which are meant to be seen clearly are punctuated with an inner dialogue. That which you want your audience to experience, you punctuate for yourself silently. Topaz has a lot to say about this in his lecture. It is rare to see that so extensively revealed and for that this DVD set will prove priceless to anyone wishing to do the studying it takes to crispen up your magic like the tasty fried chicken it should be. Yes, it is true, the real feel of Sheridan live can not be captured on tape. It is a live energy which you must be a part of in person. Perhaps it is a manipulation thing as I know the same is often said of Fred Kapps. Being there was ten times more than what you will ever see on tape. You will just have to take the word of those who were there until you start to hear the word of those who actually study and use these tapes, and their material rather than want to be entertained by them. Those who use the material on these DVDs are going to be finding the brilliance in magical framing which is what makes Sheridan so unique. Unfortunately you have to look for the framing and study it. It is not spelled out for you. I discussed some of this at length in the first AM/PM which has my interview with Jeff. If Jeff had been turned loose on the subject I guarantee you there would have been two or more DVDs on just the theories at work here. Perhaps there will be a companion DVD some day exploring the theories at work. I can understand people not being "entertained" by Sheridan's speaking presentations. This is not his strength. The material is, however, exceptionally strong in many cases. It is brilliantly conceived methodology just waiting for the presentation to be brought by the performer. And for me, the low keyed, quirky, almost obsessive, off balance genius personality of Sheridan is very interesting. It makes for an interesting contrast to the "I'm the hero" personality of so many magicians. Sheridan is a real person from whom magic flows. He is not a stage personna whose purpose is to entertain you. Magicians don't often understand that, but lay people, theater goers, they get it. The evidence is in Sheridan's legendary status as a street performer. Cheers, Tom |

I have only his volume 2 DVD on the manipulation, and I decided to buy this as another extra info DVD to my full set of Jeff Mc Bride tapes and all I can say is WOW ! what an excellent buy.
As in any magic type of effect the more info you have on a subject the more you can try out and the more you learn. I have many books too on card manipulation, but I still have the need for more. It is about learning and aquiring a different view on the same type of thing. Jeff explains his moves in a way that can be understood by anyone beginner or expert. OK, he doesn't talk about how to prepare cards and what types to use but this can be found in books, by trial and error or look at the Jeff Mc Bride tapes. In other words there is no padding on this DVD. It is good stuff at an affordable and sensible price. It is stuff you can and will use. I personally only have high praise for this DVD, and it has been professionally produced. My only downside is that the audiance do go a bit over the top when he does his card fans, but this aside I can't recommend these enough. A must-have buy! Stuart Brown Derby Magic Circle (UK)

You may be correct on the 'inner dialogue' aspect to Jeff's teachings, but somehow I don't think that was what L&L intended when they prepared this series. If it's there, it is a coincidental byproduct, and L&L should thank their lucky stars.
However, I've always had the belief that if somebody tells you they can't teach you something, watch out. Fine, maybe you've got to put a little work into it and read into things, his subconscious dialogue. But dare I say that if we're not paying to be entertained and we're not paying to be taught by somebody else ... well, something's missing. And a lot of his silent acts, while I agree he's a master, looked like the audience was confused at what was going on, because some things needed to be said to explain what was going on. As a magician, I know what the heck was going on with the watch effect ... but as a layperson, it made no sense to watch it. Look at the audience expressions ... I don't think that's astonishment at the effect; it's confusion at what the effect was. I found many of the explanations to be very confusing just trying to follow his train of thought. I found many to not have any hidden gems. If he's got a lot of theory to explain, do it. Compare this to Tommy Wonder's dvds and you get a full instruction as well as prompting to think for yourself. I have to say that a 4-disc set is not something I want to buy so that I have to teach myself what's going on because I can't follow what Jeff Sheridan's talking about. That's what video editing is supposed to be able to accomplish through numerous takes. I can only imagine the explanations that did not make the cut. No, I'm not just 'looking for secrets'. I'd like to be able to tap into this guy's brain, but these dvds just don't make the connection for me. Brian |

LOL LOL LOL
I just watched that Demo of his vol 2 video, and it was so funny when he just made a thumb fan and the audience was like "OMG, that's soo amazing!Ive never seen anything like it!" Then he like closed the fan, and for some reason they had to applaud, because I have to agree that closing a fan is without a doubt the hardest flourish the world has ever seen. lol And when he did the thumb shot and caught a card, that made it! You had to see the smiles on their face; they were in heaven ! He didn't even reveal a card, he just threw it and caught it.lol I wish I had such reactions when I perform! Anyway, for me this DVD is an exact copy of McBride's AOCM. Even if there are 2 or 3 new things in there, it's not worth it. I don't think the teaching style will beat McBride anyway.
