Can anyone recommend some good tricks that could work with baseball cards?

If you've got a few extra million lying around, you could do Copperfield's Torn and Restored Honus Wagner baseball card.
Of course, there are cheaper options. Several common plots could be done with baseball cards. Pick a card, card warp, T&R, Homing Card, etc. One I just thought of and don't really want to give away, but will.....Wild Card using 2 sets of cards of the same player but after they've been traded to another team in another uniform. If you're looking for a marketed effect, I can think of only one, but not sure of the name. It involved a selected card appearing on a previously normal looking baseball card. Anyone else remember seeing this? |

I saw that one while browsing an online shop - All-star Slugger. This is what made me think to ask about any others on the Café. Thanks, I'll start experimenting with those.

Chuck Hickoks postcard prediction. For an explanation check it on his web site.
There may be something you can do with the Out To Lunch principle. You could probably do something with a Mullica or himber wallet.

The method David Copperfield used on TV was devised by Chris Kenner/Gary Ouellet and is called Torn Assunder. It was advertised for sale in Genii after the TV special had aired for a mere $500! I read somewhere that 12 copies were sold.
The pull off signature was David Willianson's idea and credit was also given to Copperfield and Don Wayne for additional tips. Although it looked amazing on TV, I doubt the routine would be practical in most performing environments. IMHO, Guy Hollingworth's Reformation is still the best T&R out there and looks very similar to Torn Assunder. Marty |

This thread on the Genii forum is where I read the information above. Sounds like this effect has hit urban legend status, as Richard Kaufman states it was never released (even though the ad was printed in Genii).

Marty hit the nail on the head with his history of D.C.'s torn and restored. At least as far as I've heard. What I meant by a few million lying around was to purchase the Honus Wagner card. In 2007 a near mint Wagner card sold for $2.8 million. Uh, I'll stick with my $2 for 54 bikes.

So a pack of Honus Wagners will only put me back 150 million (approx). The question you've got to ask yourself is: how well do they fan and faro?
Back on topic, do baseball cards have all-alike backs (I've never seen one)? If so, you could perform many card effects with them and apply an appropriate baseball theme. One sinple idea that springs to mind is a variation of A Night Out With The Girls. You show a few great baseball cards, but somehow your helper is left with a real stinker of a card (a player from a rival team maybe?). Marty |

Really just about any card trick can be performed using baseball cards. Because I do a sports related act, I have used them in many different forms. I made my own wild card, and Svengali deck using regular baseball cards. I have done a torn and restored trick with them etc.
I have done this excercise many many times, heres what I do. First I think of what effect I want to create, them I research the best magical way to do the effect, then I brainstorm with sports stuff to accomplish the feat using things other than normal magical props. I my case I use sports props. So, take your favorite card trick, now pick up a stack of baseball cards and try using them to do it. You will find that with just a little different handling you can do most tricks. The last birthday party I performed at, the boy was a pitcher on his little league team so I wanted to use that some how. Here's what I did. First of all I used a regular deck that was a baseball team deck. Then I forced a card on him and them made it turn invisable. Next I took my TV Card Frame and knelt down like I was a catcher. I had him warm up by pitching me some real cards, it was pretty funny because they would just flutter down a foot in front of him, but then I took the invisable card and gave it to him. I told him to concentrate and really get in the "Zone". Take a big wind-up and pepper me with a fast ball right down the plate. When he did, the card appeared in the frame. I heard gasps from the kids and then laughing.. It played pretty well, but the point is just take what you already know and transform it to using baseball cards or a baseball theme. Have FUN! Mike
