gaffed Inner circle So far I've managed to gimmick 1817 Posts |
Just got it today, and wow...I’m really impressed! Obviously I haven’t had any chance to perform it yet, but I’m really looking forward to doing so. This is one of those great little effects that comes along once in awhile where all that is left is your personal presentation as it is, for all practical purposes, self working. There are several ways that you can perform it and they all seem good, but I have the feeling that I’ll go with my original thoughts and use the subliminal message aspect of it. Also, it would seem that I jumped the gun a bit with my earlier post about how to “impress” the five cards upon a spectator as some ideas are already included on that in the very well written instructions. However, if I do use the subliminal aspect of it I’ll more likely than not use my ideas, and of course the need to work it all out smoothly as the presentation of this great little effect, in my opinion, is very important. In other words, squeeze all that you possibly can from this in your presentation. A simple “wham-bam-look-what-I-just-did” just ain’t gonna cut it as it deserves much more attention.
OK, now I’ll do a little nitpicking here, and believe me, these are very minor points, but I’ve always been somewhat of a perfectionist, and admittedly, I always feel that I have to “tweak” everything I get to my satisfaction. Yeah, I can get a tad anal retentive at times so keep that in mind. The cards are beautiful as to having that aged look, but the backs do not have the same look. I’m planning on using some 0000 steel wool to the backs to match the front. Years ago I used to make gaffed cards professionally and I once had to make a set of cards for a client who wanted them to look used and aged, so I’ve done this before and it works out quite good as long as you don’t overdo it. The photo(s) look great as to the time period, but do not have an aged look as to having been in a wallet for a long period of time. The backs have somewhat of an aged look, but the photo itself does not match the back as for that “old” or “worn-out” look. However, I’m sure I can easily take care of that. As for the wallet itself, it does not look old at all, but I seriously doubt that the look of the wallet will come into play, or even enter the spectator(s) mind. Then again, if you handle this effect (I hate the term magic "TRICK”) in a different way there is no need whatsoever as to having anything with an aged look, and you can make up your own photos and use new cards if you so wish. After going over this effect I then gave in and also purchased Heirloom and the Heirloom wallet. (so much for my promise!) That is how much I thought of this great little effect without even yet having performed it! I have a gift certificate code plus the discount code at Penguin so what the hell. Will Legacy fool a magician (a question I HATE, but there it is), and the answer is....who gives a rat’s a * *! Knowing the people I now do magic for I’m very confident that this, and hopefully combined with Heirloom, will kill. Make no mistake about it, as I’m very confident that Legacy can stand quite well on its own legs, but I figured that at times I may wish to draw it out, as it were, with Heirloom, but I’ll see as times goes by. Bottom line....HIGHLY recommended and a solid 2 thumbs up.

Ok, few quick comments... first regarding aging...
Yeah, all props are actually new - though look old in terms of printing, colour etc. However you'll need to 'rough them up' a bit if you want REALLY authentic. Be careful though. For my photos, I scrunched them a bit then folded them on identical corners for an added touch of 'authenticity'. It'll all work out ;-) For you 'white kinfolk challenged'(like that btw!), just change the story. Doesn't have to be your 'Uncle' or 'Grandfather' - could be the old guy who taught you sleight of hand. "He kind of just appeared in town one day. Played a lot of cards and seemed to win a lot - that's why he was always smiling. I watched him day after day and he noticed. We got talking and after a while he taught me his secrets..." Plenty of things you can change in the presentation to make it work for you. If you want to bounce around some ideas, this thread's a good place... Cheers, Jamie.

Jamie is absolutely right. On the few occasions that I happen to see my brother he always asks me to show him a wee bit of magic, which of course I'm always more than willing to do. Seeing that we obviously have the same relatives I would have to change the story a tad as to the picture and one of the men being my uncle, or whatever relationship one may choose to use. Bottom line, there is no need whatsoever in referring to anyone in the photo being a relative of yours. As a matter of fact, in the several presentations given in the instructions there is only one that refers to one of the men being a relative. Any explanation you wish to make up in reference to the photo will suffice nicely and is open to a myriad of stories.

To me an “out” is an alternative way to end an effect if by chance things do not turn out as planned, and or the way the effect is hopefully intended to work. Suffice to say that when you perform Legacy that you will never fail. I’m sorry if that comes off sounding rather ambiguous, but I certainly don’t wish to say anything that could be considered as exposure.

Wow - what a terrible review they did for this on their show. The comments on Facebook and YouTube about this are also really bad. Nobody seems to like Legacy but I think a big reason for this is that they couldn't be bothered to do a serious review of it and just made fun of it all the way through without really giving it a proper discussion.

Saw the review, was disappointed but in all honestly, I'm losing no sleep over it; see the show for what it is, read all the other great reviews and make your own minds up about this, guys.
And to balance this up, here's a review I saw today from Online Visions: http://www.online-visions.com/reviews/0906legacy.html Karma is restored! Cheers, Jamie.

As for You Tube (the gathering place of prepubescent bed wetting children) the only thing I've seen is the demo with just a few comments, and none of them seemed to be bad. Just what is the link on You Tube where you are seeing all of these bad comments? Oh well, either way, I still love the effect and let the others miss out on something really good.

Legacy is an awesome quality effect, period the end. I love it, so far every one I showed it to was amazed . And it can be worded according to each performer. Very happy with it.

Had a chance to perform it again last night for a waitress that I’ve know for a some years. She happened to be on break so she sat down with me at my table so I did one trick and at the last moment I decided to do Legacy for her as I almost forgot that I had it on me. The reason I mention this particular performance is that this girl is one smart cookie, and if anyone is possibly going to burn me....she is the one as not much of anything gets by her!
I’m not going to get into my whole personal presentation, but suffice to say that it is oriented toward the subliminal message theme. As a matter of fact, I state right from the beginning that I will influence/make the spectator choose that card that I want them to! This kind of goes against the grain with most tricks where you have someone choose a card and at times might possibly say; “Now, did I influence you in any way as to the card you chose?”, etc. Nope, with my presentation I do just the opposite, and it really has been working out great and it seems to really mess about with the spectators minds and leaves them really wondering! Long story short, Legacy really got her and she was totally dumfounded and actually left her mumbling to herself; “How did...?”, “I mean, no way you could have made me....!”, and on and on. Later on, when she gave me the bill I called her over (just as a joke), and asked her if the bill was right. She simply glared at me and said; “Don’t start f’ing with my mind again you s.o.b.”! Yes, she was joking and she is a real sweetheart and we talk to each other that way all the time, but yet, at the same time she actually felt as if I had done so! GOT HER!!!! Bottom line, Legacy is what you make of it. If you don’t take the time to give it a proper presentation/story line and simply show the picture, have a card chosen and the reveal you will fail poorly and rightfully so. Seeing that for all practical purposes it is self working there is no excuse for then not taking the time to devote a good and proper story to go along with it. If you can’t, and or don’t wish to devote the time to do so then I’d strongly stay away from it and just walk around doing the ID for the rest of your lives as this would then definitely not be for you. No reflection on ID as I still love it and use it, but I'm sure you get my point.

Magic Friday is on a brief hiatus (I'm got some super exciting new projects on the go!) but I'm still performing it (I'm just not writing them up at the moment). Anyways, Legacy was one of my recent ones and it played sooooo well. People loved it. All day.
