I'm afraid that (our now legendary) Cag has problems with people not hustling in casinos. Yet, private games, amateurs games, etc., are the best ones to hustle. Yes, less money (even if I wouldn't bet my life on that), but very low risk to get caught. If any.

I would almost rather get caught in a casino than in most of the private games I have played. At least the casino punishment will involve a judge.

I had the impression that it's almost impossible to cheat a casino.

More exactly, you would prefer it... in 2017. Certainly not in 1970 . |

Because of the ease of access to casinos, most people will gravitate to one if it is in reasonably close proximity. However, played in a number of private cash games back in the day and liked them a lot. Usually pretty easy to beat if one was capable and you do not need a big bag of tricks. |

I think one has to draw some sort of distinction between "private games of serious substance", and private 1-2 (tops) games with family and friends.
Private family and friends games have exploded in popularity, and continue to grow as people realize how much fun poker (for example) is when you play for small stakes. Private games of serious substance however, such that they see enough money cross the table that they would actually be worth hustling have shrunk on the vine to the point where not only are there far less of them around, but one also has to have pretty good contacts to even get an invite to sit at the table. In general terms, as Cag notes above, with casinos on every street corner these days, the private game of serious substance has pretty much dried up. The big private games of serious substance that make it into the press, like the "big" rotating table in Vegas, and the private games as hosted by Molly Bloom and Tobey Maguire are little more than cons and hustles themselves, and don't really play into this conversation.

It seems Cags hypocrisy knows no bounds. Fist Cag, an ineffectual person, who indulges in fantastic daydreams, is found out again inventing a life for himself on the Magic Café forums and then he has the temerity to tell me to get a life. This way of yours, old boy, is no way to gain respect.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Tommy's post has truth behind it that would be worthy of consideration for those who are serious about the Gambling Spot perhaps once again being more than what it apparently turned into over the past few years.
Generally, I think it would be safe to assume that if something could be taken as an insult in the schoolyard, or elsewhere in real life - then that same comment would, and likely will be taken as an insult here in the forum. The old nugget "get a life" is an insult regardless of where it's presented, and if anybody sincerely wishes to move this forum back into its position as a quality place to discuss gambling and hustling, it may be best to avoid insults all together. Beyond the somewhat instant satisfaction one gets from typing an insult out, and then pressing "send", those insults contribute nothing at all to the forum, and ultimately serve nobodies interest. YMMV of course, but I am personally instituting a "no insult" policy in my use of the forum. (Note though that calling a "newby" a newby, or calling B_S on something that is indeed B_S isn't an insult, but is simply an honest appraisal.)

Mind you the day Cag stops telling his ripping yarns will be a sad day, for that will be the day I stop laughing at his hyperbole or downright horseshit. Really though Cag is not a bad guy, who may well have been around and known several professional hustlers over the years. He went to casino school and worked in the gaming industry. Cag is a
well-read educated fellow, who studied all the tricks of the trade, game projection, security, casino management, and etcetera. He wrote books on card counting and done some. We know he has some skills and we have the greatest respect and we value highly what he has said about all of that.

Wow, I did not know all these things about Cagliostro. It is almost like:
"They seek him here, they seek him there, those Frenchies seek him everywhere. Is he in heaven or is he in hell? That ***ed elusive Pimpernel." Who was the Scarlet Pimpernel? The Pimpernel's character has his setting in the streets of Paris, which are awash in blood as Robespierre and his henchmen send hundreds of French aristocrats to the guillotine. Against this backdrop one unknown Englishman and his brave band of followers leave their genteel lives behind to spirit the French royals to safety in England. The question that France's new leaders demanded to know was: who is the Scarlet Pimpernel? The question on The Gambling spot evidently is, "Who is Cagliostro?" Are we soon to find out that the dashing Pimpernel is actually the newly "tommyfied" fictional characterization of... "Cagliostro?" ... and equally dashing I might add. |
