I've seen some magicians give handouts to his volunteers during his performance. I don't do this because the ones I don't pick can get frustrated. What is your opinion?

Depends on how hard it is to get volounteers. We've done shopping mall shows for shy Asian and Polynesian kids where we had trouble getting assistants, so we gave out lollies as rewards (bribes, really) - that solved that problem.
Where there's no shortage of volounteers, e.g. schools, we don't bother. Being selected to help is reward enough in their eyes. At parties, we usually give out colouring sheets (cartooned versions of us, with contact details) to all the kids. Cheers, Bill

I think it is easy to get sidetracked by give aways.
I once meet a clown who gave helium balloons, balloon animals, magic kits, colouring sheets, a pass the parcel and a present for the birthday child! It took him half an hour to get though them all and the kid's got very grabby and greedy. For me, giveaways should be either a)Entertaining (balloon animals WITH gags and routines) b)Marketing (colouring sheets etc.) |

HI,
They are also a great control device if the kids believe that only the helpers will get one or as I do with my balloon model givaways the helpers get much more deluxe models than the rest of the party. this really helps with control when the kids have seen you 3 or 4 times before. Phillip |

Have any of you ever had problems where kids want to sway/pop the balloons throughout the rest of your show as interference?

I give the helper a ballon model at the end of their bit of stardom, The model is made with it's own comedy routine I give it to the helper they take a bopw and get their appause I then take it off them for safe keeping until after the show. That way they can't play with it or pop it during the show, the others know 2 things,
1, if they want one they have to be picked to help, 2, they have to be good to be picked.
Yours Funfully

What I do is always give my assistant on stage either a coloring flyer or a magician's assistan certificate. My belief is that any person you bring up on stage is a guest and they should be treated that way. I want my guest to feel appreciated and i want them to know that I appreciate their help.
I always tell the kids that anyone who did not get a flyer or certificate during the show will get one after the show is over. This way every kid there goes home happy and it tends to get the kids to smile and behave better because they know they may be receiving a nice gift following the performance. this also gives me the time to greet the kids and the parents following the show as well as sign autographs for any of the kids that may want one. It works for me and I have never had any problems with it. Just make sure if you hand things out, that it is fast and too the point and does not become a distraction during the performance.

I use to give out prizes for helpers during the show, but I stopped doing it because I found it slowed the show down too much.
I have thought about the magician's assistant cerificate. Kyle, I gather you made your own up as I see your also a graphic designer! Mark |

Mark;
Yes, being a graphic designer and artist, I design all my own hand outs and flyers etc. I design coloring flyers for magicians using their own image and also certificates for use. They are great to give to the kids and really makes them feel important. The parents always love them and tend to hang them up at home. This always keeps my information infront of them in hopes for future work. If you would like information of design of flyers and certificates or how to make some really easily, I would be happy to help you out with it. Please just PM me.

Agree with Phillip It is great crowd control to give out something to the helpers. No balloons here however, they pop and they are loud.
I do give out something that is pretty cool and all the kids want one. It is a pcs of paper rolled up into a magic wand with a rubber band around it. Inside are tricks that they can learn at home (very easy tricks). And of course it has all my info on it. The kids that help get one. But at the end of show We play a game and if they all play the game correct they all win the paper magic wand. And of course they all win. Ken |

Ken:
That is a wonderful idea and I do a similar thing as well. I hand out certifcates and coloring flyers to all the kids who help out during the show. At the end I realize that none of the magic could have happened without the help of ALL the kids. That way every child gets a coloring flyer, certificate and a magic wand. The magic wands are fun because I make them all honrary magicians. They take the secret oath with me and I demonstrate the proper way of using their new wands by using the rabbit comedy wand. It is really great, makes the kids feel good and the parents like the fact that I am talling the kids they are NOT for bopping people.
