Well... From what I hear...
The trick originated from a gag toy that was a rubber walnut. I guess you were supposed to slip it into a dish of real walnuts. Then when someone picks it up and tries to crack it, it just squishes... And that was supposed to be funny. Then like most stuff, a magician finds it one day and says "I can do something with that." So in the spirit of things... You really have to make it realistic to be able to fool someone that's trying to crack it. SO I not only make it look like a walnut, it tastes, and even smells like one too. How do I do that? Gnomes. I have gnomes that do all that for me. Randi |

We all know that Gnomes are crazy nutz.
Posted: Apr 6, 2011 10:29am I wonder who created the effect. Riser says, his book, he got it from Persi Diaconis. Vernon was said to have a routine. Anyone have any more information on it?

The information about the gag walnut was told to me by Brian.
I think he said it was Dai that came up with it. So as far as I know, that's the history he found when putting out the effect the first time. Randi |

I've seen a film with Vernon performing the effect and, as already reported, allowing one of the (real) walnuts rolling off the table for a spectator to kindly pick it up (implicitely witnessing that the walnut is real).
This is not a proof of precedence, but it's a proof that The Professor had spent time seriously polishing the effect.

Also from what I was told...
The company that made the rubber walnut stopped making them and make plastic ones. The plastic ones didn't have the same ability of the rubber ones, so the tick went away. And thanks everyone... The bottomless glasses are all gone. Randi |

Regarding the origin of the routine, the effect and the method are described in the fac simile of Bruce Cervon's Castle Noteebooks Vol 1 published by L&L p 180 where it is attributed on February 7, 1965 to "Vernon" (way before Ed Brown publication).
Admittedly this is not an actual proof but, with that written date, it could be considered as circumstancial evidence

New version of Completely Nuts.
This one has the DVD, a new revamped gimmick walnut, and superb gimmick glass. Right now the kit is on sale for $40... it won't be for long. The special glass is worth that price alone! |

I was fortunate enough to see Harry Riser do this live. Ever since then I too had been looking for one. I finally found one from Wack-o-magic.com, from their ad here on the Café.
It shipped super fast and I ordered real walnuts to go with it. When it arrived, I closed my eyes and poured them out. I then tried to pick out the rubber walnut. It took me three tries before I got it. And even then it was just a matter of chance that I happened to get it right. It looks absolutely indistinguishable from the real walnuts even when you know!

Quote: Had you done a little more homework, you would have found that Vernon learned the routine from Milt Kort of Detroit and has clearly stated that. Milt in turn learned it from another fellow, Marc Jacobs I believe. On 2011-04-07 07:16, Lawrence O wrote:
