I did say the Pro Van is a good cage to find out if you are interested and which to persue and venture into this magic trick. They are no longer manufactured so it is only available to stock on hand at dealers. I met Les Smith at Owen in 1980, he was a very nice man and spent several hours of his time with me and showed me the entire Owen plant. He made me really feel special. No... Paul didn't steal anything. We both were students of Ken Brooke, who's gag it is. He, obviously, taught it to both of us. The link you provided doesn't go to anything about Paul. BTW, Paul and Debbie are flying in to L.A. and we're putting together a birthday party for him.

Thanks, I had not seen this clip before.
When Ken Brooke came over to perform at an IBM convention in Miami a Mark Leddy, the booker for the Ed Sullivan show, saw him do this, and his multiplying bottles, and asked him to come up to NY and be on the show. But, Harry Stanley, the dealer Ken was working for told him NO, YOU HAVE A LECTURE TO DO SUNDAY. Ken was heartbroken by this and never wanted to ever come back to the U.S. However we did talk him into coming over (after his first stroke) to be honored at the Desert Magic Seminar. Siegfried and Roy threw a great party for him at their home.

Pete, I read that, in one of the book on Ken Brooke, or some place. Life is all about choices and the decisions we make in life. I doubt that the Ed Sullivan Show would have sky rocketed his performing career, but it would have been a 'mile stone' for him.
I think he should have done it and dealt with Harry Stanley later; as I see all that Ken Brooke created for Stanley in the catalogues. Ken was more valuable to Stanley then Brooke may have realized at the time. Pete, are you saying Ken Brooke performed the Vanishing Bird Cage regularly in his act? I have not read this was a regular performance piece of Ken Brooke's. Just items like: Paper Balls over the Head Linking Rings Multiplying Bottles Dancing Cane Serpent Silk Vanishing Bird Cage with Jumping Stool Do you know or remember what else he included in his stage acts? |

He did not do the cage in his cabaret act. I think mostly at conventions. He did a lot of comedy shtick, comedy walks, monolog gags and a routine with silks where he kept falling off a chair. Impossible to describe the latter. He'd put one foot up an lift the other and fall.
His opening was a VERY BRIEF dancing cane, where his comedy dancing was more important than the magic... then he'd throw the cane to a waiting waiter and say, "sell it."

I would love to see this performed on video. James P. Riser only provides some still shots of the trick. Anyone know of a magician that is performing it in his act yet? |

I had the Martin/Fraskson cage. But never used it in a show as it didn't fit my way, so I sold it to a collector.
If you don't want to spend a lot, because you can't justify it, get and Owen cage without a reel. Then PM me how to vanish it, and get rid of it so you can continue your act without it on you. My pull system, which I lecture on costs under $1.00.

Thank you for the link to the Riser Baby Linde, it looks REALLY, REALLY good! And he has a definitive comparison to his new birdcage specs and elaborates a bit on the Lindhorst cages, too here: http://jamesriser.com/Magic/Vanishing/Bi......eresting reading! |

Does anyone here know where I can get a small rubber bird for my vanishing bird cage - prefferably a parakette - seem to me - I recall seeing them in the Tannen's Cataloger 20+ years ago.
Please let me know if you know where I can get one. Thanks! |

Norm Neilsen still has his canary available.
http://www.nnmagic.com/magicitems/stagemagicpage_al.htm I have to say, I saw one at Abbott's and they are very - very small canaries. Abbott's doesn't make theirs any longer, and neither does Owen's Magic. The Para-cuties that you referenced from Louis Tannen has been off the market for over 40 years now. Recently a new latex person has come on the market, I believe he is from Europe or Spain. Stevens Magic carry their products and they do have a latex Canary. http://www.stevensmagic.com/index.php?ma......d=112654 I have not seen this one, so cannot give you any info about it other then what is on Stevens site. After Billy McComb came out with his version of the Vanishing Bird Cage several years ago, I like his idea of using a mouse instead of bird. Mice live in cages as well, but usually on the bottom of the cage. Any of the novelty Mice will work, but I would use the Judy Puppet Mouse and put foam inside. http://www.abbottmagic.com/Trixie-Judy-t......oryId=-1 |

I have to say that I own the Pro-Van Bird Cage and I think it is fantastic. I decided that I need another one in case something happens to my first one.
DAYTONA MAGIC no longer has it on their website. I found a manufacturer page http://www.funtimemagic.com/retpl.html and it is discontinued! This is not good news. Does anyone know where I can get another one of these cages. The price wasn't very high - but the quality was great! |

I have a bird cage built by Uncle Pete and it is quite fast. I believe the one sold by Abbots is based on its design, but I only used it a couple of times, it sits with my other collectibles. I did buy an Abbots version and it was the same, fast, but I just didn't feel it was sturdy enough for long term use. I bought an owens, and as others have said, after you break it in a bit, it works great. Don't want to be disloyal to the family, but I've used my owens for years and have no plans for changing.

Did a Google search and found this listing of the birdcage in question. If they have them in stock, this it the best less expensive cage ever made.
http://www.gycklaren.com/en/articles/2.6......e-provan It has to be old stock, so get it while they have them. I of course inquire before ordering to see they really have them in stock. |

$75 is a heck of a deal if it includes a decent pull. I had a cage I bought at a magic auction. It was wrapped in red ribbon and was VERY loose and flimsy, but I was told it was an Abbott. It was made in the sixites, and did not come with a pull. So, I made my own.
I think it was based on the Lamp-Chimney pull, I'm not sure. I had to have my jacket altered to make the sleeves wider. After constructing the pull with thin nylon rope, I used a fishing weight and jaw-clip, the same I used to make my Miller Hold-Out. Worked like a charm, and I only paid $40 for the cage! Wendel Gibson (Walter's nephew) gave me the specs to make the pull. I wish I had that today. Another great magical item lost in that cursed foreclosure! Doug |

My first Vanishing Bird Cage was a Lindhorst that I bought from Gene DeVoe. Wish I knew where it was!
The new Riser cages appear to be somewhat based on a Lindhorst.....of course, with Mr. Riser's unque skill set and knack for imporving things. |

The Abbott's only came with a thin nylon parachute rope and instructions how to use it. Abbott's have the instructions for download here: http://www.abbottmagic.com/Instant-Instr......oryId=-1 If you have the prop, then it will become clear. |

I have decided to change to the late Billy McComb idea of a white mouse instead of a canary bird. It will make the trick funnier and better in a lot of different ways.
