Hmmm! I am a novice at magic. But if Mickey were to tell me "I do this routine using this pass, this flourish and this retention" I would know the tools he used, understand the vocabulary and perhaps the theory. Could I perform anything to the same standard ? Of course not!.
Having read through the thread and viewed the offered videos the following thought crossed my tyro mind. As a near non magician, non of his moves seemed over flamboyant, simply lyrical and magical. Really not sure where the complaints of over gesturing are coming from. Yes I've seen more sedate coin magicians (David Roth perhaps) and enjoyed his quiet intimate style and elegance, this in no way spoiled or otherwise detracted from my appreciation of Mickey's consummate skills. Are we all to be clones? If so it's back to wearing top hat and tails for all of us or alternatively eyeliner and grunge clothing. Sadly mickey is not selling anything. There is no product I can buy in the hope of emulating him. To whit what is the problem with him sharing his experience and thoughts with the forum? That is all. I will now go away and practice |

Right beverage.
Mickey's act is unique in that he performs a circle show, usually for hundreds of people at a time. We are not accustomed to seeing this in coin magic which is usually the most intimate of close-up. He must use broad gestures so that people can see what's going on. In circus terminology, this is called "playing large". He spends countless hours studying and practicing the things that work best for his audience.

Secret # 9 “THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE”
While performing close-up magic with coins ………………..I know nothing is more powerful ( when it comes to attracting and keeping attention) than mis-directing my audience straight into a brief emotional stunning state of dis-belief……..Only to have them “INSTANTLY” re-direct themselves back to reality on their own. I understand that a “ BRIEF EMOTIONAL STUNNING STATE OF DIS-BELIEF” makes people speechless and feel good inside all over, leaving them no choice but to express these feelings with smiles, inspiring thoughts and laughter . Such is the power of Magical Entertaining !!! Notice in this video clip : CLICK > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROxBCPLkEKg The “REAL ELEMENT OF SURPRISE" is not me and my unexpected significant actions……….It is actually the audience themselves, surprised at themselves the second they come to realize they are thinking what they are. They are very surprised at themselves for actually “THINKING" they are seeing and hearing the “IMPOSSIBLE". Very Seldom in life people get to feel these emotional brief moments. When they do it changes their state of mind !!!! MICKEY SILVER - “HANDS OF LAS VEGAS" |

Great Job!!! Where's my camera?
Mickey can also vanish cameras and cell phones. Made my camera vanish in a matter of seconds surround by people. I couldn't figure out what he did with it. He's constantly fooling Magicians. Paul |

Since the subject of Mickey for so long was his release of the Work on his Retention (or as he calls it: The SUV (Silver Ultimate Vanish)), so many have expressed disappointment that he never made a tutorial DVD. He did promise to. He even promised to personally teach ME, but I'm happy he never did. I developed my own Retention Vanish after getting Mike Rubinstein's Encyclopedia Of Coin Sleights. I worked on that for two years.
Then, Larry Barnowsky's 21st Century Coin Mechanics was released. On page 23 is The Universal Retention Vanish (The URV). That, my Coin Magic friends, is the closest you will ever get to the SUV. I know of no other method that accomplishes this effect. I believe Evikshion (sp?) has mastered the SUV. But the ONLY person Mickey EVER revealed this to was Vinny. Doug |

Thanks Doug for the mention. 21st Century Coin Mechanics is almost out of print (the 2nd printing). Will not be printing any more copies. I have less than a dozen copies left. In addition to the URV, 13 unique and original sleights, and 11 original routines.

O yes I totally agree with everyone on the Café about so many Retention Vanishes being Effective ...... Honestly, I have seen so many Magicians perform their style Retention Vanish and its 100 % fool proof to all those with no knowledge of sleight of hand- " IT WORKS" ...............I find Eric Chien's retention vanish unbelievably " EXCELLENT" as is Larry Barnowsky's "PHENOMENAL" , not to mention how "OUTSTANDING" my very good friend Evikshin's vanish is ......... But the facts remain in the art of sleight of hand, whether we like it or not >>> Everyone ( AND I MEAN EVERYONE) is different, no one person can be exactly like the other person, no matter how hard we practice or how long one tries. Remember we are all very special in our own ways and each and every one of us have our own special qualities & talent that are strictly our own. If we stop and truly look at ourselves first and put our very own special qualities to work , Amazing things will happen.
Example: Over the many, many years I have met and seen so many excellent Magicians ( and I mean excellent) trying to bring their stage magic to the level of David Copperfield but they all failed one way or the other, it just never took off and they never received the WOW Copperfield got. ....................The Bottom line is you cannot be someone you are not! Copperfield offers such great showmanship his audience can't help but to love him, not just his magic but him - himself. Over the past 30 years I never heard anyone ( and I mean anyone) bad mouth this guy except people in the very field of Magic ...... AND THAT'S WRONG. I know a few magicians here in las Vegas and these guys can execute a fantastic retention vanish with a coin or Casino Chip " HOWEVER"..... These guy's come to me and ask me why they can perform this vanish so good in front of a camera or a mirror when they practice and also in front of just one person at a time, but when they have a crowed moving around in front of them they just screw it up and can't do it, so they don't even use it. So they ask me HOW I CAN DO WHAT I DO WITH SO MANY PEOPLE AROIND ME!! The one thing I find " EXTREMELY" important is that it is absolutely imperative " FOR ME" to be able to execute this move while being totally surrounded in a crowed. This means having many eyes looking over my shoulders ( burning my hands) at the same time I am showing the people in front of me and to the sides. But then again I am always in the middle of crowds and constantly moving around. I decided to put together a short Video of my updated skills & retention vanish for all you Coin sleight of hand guys here on the Café' !!!! It will be cool!!!! MICKEY SILVER |

I see a lot of folks who complain about Mickey not "revealing" the secret to his retention vanish, but frankly, it seems to me he does openly reveal what it is that makes up his original approach in each of his videos and in threads like these where he talks shop. In fact, he seems more open than most pro magicians.
Everyone wants to hope and believe that there is some "secret formula" or arcane bit that makes a great coin magician as wonderful as they are. The truth is, they love what they do more than the rest of us, and practicing and performing is nothing like work- it's something done because they love it, and couldn't stop if they wanted to. It's the same with great musicians or wonderful painters or even a world class basketball player. Their gifts are 99% constant playing/working and using what unique gifts god gave them. I thought that Mickey's last post about everyone being different, and everyone performing a retention vanish, (or any trick), differently to fit their own self to be absolute gold. It's the sort of nugget that EVERY magician needs to keep in their heart. It's okay to study a classic move and practice it from a book or video to learn it- but the GREAT magician will always intuitively mold it to fit his or her persona, quirks and physical traits to change and mold it into something their own. Part of being an artist- which all good magicians are- is learning your strengths and making the best use of them. In my opinion, Mickey Silver's advice in just the last post alone offers a whole bookload of indispensable advice that many writers on magic never acquire the wisdom to truly grasp and integrate into their own material. You want to know Mickey's secrets? Here they are in this long thread. The trouble comes when we think that Mickey's magic comes down to WHAT Mickey is doing, when, really, it's more about HOW Mickey is approaching the Art of Magic that he loves. He is at play when most of us think of practice as "work". He "believes" his magic is real. He enjoys his coins antics as much as the audience does, and he tends, (I think), towards responding with his intuition and experience with crowdwork. His style of magic is a bit of a throwback towards earlier vaudeville type performances with wide movements, more of a open handed cartwheel-juggling that seems impossible. His coin work reminds me a bit of Sylvester's coin handling in flavor, sans the props and cruder comedy. (And that is a high complement in my eyes as Sylvester also understands his coin theory intuitively, and is equally broad, sweeping and open-handed in his work.) Both magicians seem to carry elements of the earlier era of T. Nelson Downs in the way they showcase their art. Kudos to you, Mickey Silver, for showing us that each of us can push the envelope in ways outside of the beaten path- I think you really have forged your own trail, are a Master of what you do, and, most importantly, it's always incredible fun to see you work.

Listen carefully and study what Mickey says and watch his performances. You will learn so much about misdirection, psychology, and deception.
I first met Mickey at the April 2004 Cape Cod Conclave, and we had some long memorable sessions together. There is no one more skilled with coins than anyone I have seen. His mechanics are perfect and his effects unbelievable. My wife was so amazed at dinner when he made a silver dollar appear on top of her ketchup bottle. Watch him and learn. Larry |
