The Jolyon Jenkins candle is a real candle that you make yourself, so it will look as realistic as you design it to be. However, there is a limit on how cleverly you can conceal any lighting mechanism in a wick, which determines how close up you can permit the spectator, at least while it is in the process of lighting. You might, instead, use the idea to light a hurricane oil lantern which has more hiding places for such, or consider enclosing the candle in a dark-lantern enclosure which would also limit how well the mechanism can be seen and would not be out of place in most bizarre settings.

The lantern is a great idea. Wonder how hard it would be to ignite it?

It would be no more difficult than igniting the candle out in the open, provided the antenna for the radio signal is not impeded by the metal structure. However, a separate antenna worked into the decorations of the outer lantern to look like a vine or something might solve any radio control problems.

I don't think the metal structure would impede the signal too much since there would also be glass, which the radio waves would pass through easily. The self-lighting candle is easily adapted.

Just ordered the plans it sounds like a fun project. I am also wondering why you would need to light it more than once in a performance. I think someone seeing it once is enough for them to want to get spooked and leave. I think the five dollar price is a good deal as I am sure at some point you will have to fix the $250 dollar one so learning how to make it should be a necessity.

I'm not sure how the $250 one works so it may not be the same method as mine!

To clarify, are there any limitations on the size of the candle? Is there a minimum size for example? Can you light multiple candles using the same remote? Is that possible? Thanks!

The large candle shown in the video is ideal because it can contain everything, including batteries and electronic components. If you want a smaller candle, you need to figure out a different place to keep the working gadgets, like in a decorative (but hollow) candlestick, or in a table that can be plugged up to the candle by a secret means. Some remotes can handle multiple units from the same control device, so yes, more than one is possible. Jolyon shows you how to build the one big candle that you see in the video. Where you take it from there is up to you and your imagination, aided by your electronics skills, knowledge and understanding. My advice: start with the one candle. If you can accomplish that, then start getting fancy.

Here is our Version of a self lighting Candle:

https://vimeo.com/143661101

https://vimeo.com/143477099

The videos are made during the "prototype-phase" and the wires are not hidden.
I have build two versions: Version 1 is not a real candle, but it looks like it is used in churches. This version you can refill.
The Version two is only the electronic who can build in every candle.

Don't know if I want sell them yet. It was a project for fun.

Any suggestions?

cheers

I've always felt that a Candle being snuffed out & Leaving us in darkness is far more powerful.. self lighting candles has always had the whiff of"Hokey" to me..
Many ways of achieving it including being "blown" out.. from afar.

I agree that it's more spooky, to have the lights go out than to come on.
