1. A card visually penetrates a box.
2. Their card vanishes from the pack. 3. Their signed card appears in the box. Kyle |

Kyle,
To help you get to where you want to be I would suggest at this point visualize what the effect would look like if it actually happened. You've now listed out the effects that are happening, so now how could you accomplish those effects and hold a clear and natural feel to the whole routine? I would start with the card selection process. If they sign their card and then you "actually" lay it down, how could you accomplish that. Or work from the end to the beginning. If you want their card to end up in the box, how does it get in there? Then look at the step before that and so on. Why isn't their card the one that goes in the box first? could you do that? then, could you get their card back in the box? |

Kyle,
We've talked privately many times before. Ben is a good friend of mine and his interest in helping you is completely sincere. I would think hard about any advice he gives you. If you don't want to do it in a public forum, that's certainly ok. I just don't want you to think that Ben is trying to pick on you. On the contrary, he really wants to see you succeed. Kyle,
I am going to be uncharacteristically kind in my response: the effect is not good. It is cluttered. A card is selected and put aside. Then another card is placed in the box and penetrates. Why have the card picked to begin with? It is inelegant and illogical. I watched some of your other stuff Kyle. A lot of it suffers from the same awkward routining. I think you should reflect on streamlining effects rather than trying to 'invent' tricks. @ James Alan, What's esoteric about discussing the structure of a routine? -Don |

I'm just thinking it's not a good way to vanish the card, picking it up putting it onto the deck to put it back on the table to vanish it just doesn't do it.
Hmph...... Ja
Magic or just an illusion? it's a free choice .... isn't it?

Yes, I could of course do a fade away vanish kind of thing, or show it to be an indifferent card, or switch for a blank card..
This is the kind of constructive criticism I love! Thanks, Kyle |

What I'd love to see here is an exchange between Ben and Kyle that I'm sure we ALL could learn from! After they get it worked out maybe open it up for discussion but not until then so as not to muddy the waters! If methods are to be discussed, maybe move it downstairs to Secret Sessions!
Just a thought, MMc |

Kyle,
The people who like it do not know what they are talking about. It looks like you are just stringing moves together to make an 'effect.' There is no economy of motion and the plot itself is jumbled. |

So its not magic for magicians..... but for a layperson I think its a good effect, I actually just tried this out on someone and got a very good reaction. As far as the routine goes you get cards penetrating a box and a transpo so I think its a good'un. Great work Kyle, you're very talented!!!!

Kyle,
To answer your question, "I have had several prestigious magicians like it - does that mean that they 'Don't know what they are talking about', or just have a different view?" It means that they do not know what they are talking about. If any magician disputes my claim feel free to pm me. I understand you have a drive to create. That's great. However, you need to take some time to carefully study the structures of classic effects. Ask yourself, "Why is my trick superior to other penetration effects?" |

Kyle, maybe those prestigious magicians you mentioned just want to be nice and encourage a young fellow? The important thing is, that you'll learn much more from those magicians who give you honest critique (even if it hurts), and who by the way, do know much more about magic and are way more experienced in performing magic than you, than you'll learn from the backslappers. Think about it.

I saw Kyle perform this at a lecture to a very top magician from the US, and he liked it. No disrespect, but I think their opinion would be more highly regarded than yours |

Luke,
Do you know Donnie's credentials? You may very well be comparing apples to oranges or then again this "very top magician from the US" may have been doing exactly what Donnie suggests! In my life (over a half century) my BEST mentors have not been the ones to blow sunshine and rainbows up my arse! MMc |
