So here's the skinny. Chris Piercy has a new ebook out entitled Cradle Control.
The ebook itself can be purchased through Chris for around 16 US dollars and is a 39 page ebook. The ebook itself is devoted to one sleight, the Cradle Control. The control has a ton of different applications other than just controlling the card. You can use it as a color change or card to impossible location. All of the different applications are covered in the ebook. With a little thought, you could use it as an instant card reversal as well. Along with three variations of the basic handling, Chris has included 8 effects. The move itself can be easily adapted to other routines as well. All of the routines in the ebook use the control in one form or another, but most of them teach other cool sleights as well. Let's take a quick look at the included effects: Pocketed Reversal-One card is selected and placed in the performers pocket, a second card is selected and placed reversed in the deck. The two cards instantly switch places, these cards are then lost into the deck again only to found again in the performers pocket, they are again lost into the deck and then revealed to not only be in the performers pocket again but to be the only cards the performer has. This is a 3 phase, completely impromptu effect. I like magic like this. It is very visual and has a nice kicker ending. 9/10 Eraser-Four cards are introduced, which are misprints with a back printed on both sides. A card is selected at random from the deck of cards and committed to memory. The attention is then drawn back to the four cards, a spectator is asked to choose one of them, and this is placed into their hands and is changed into their thought of card. This is a cool little packet trick. For those people that like packet tricks, this one will appeal to you. For those that don't, it won't. You will need a few gaffs to perform this effect. For that reason alone, I give it a 7/10 Anniversary Tango-After choosing and signing a card each, the performer finds each card several times and makes them change places and finally reach an impossible climax. A handling of the anniversary waltz plot. Chris' routine is a bit longer and has some cool shows of the cards being in different places. This requires the same type of gaff used in Eraser. 8/10 UCR: Unbitious Card Routine-Magicians are always showing off what the special important cards from the deck can do, but what about the shy retiring unbitious cards? An impromptu super sweet effect. I love quirky tricks like this. A lot of magicians perform an ambitious sequence. Be one of the first to do an unbitious sequence! 9/10 The Commuter-The magician is trying to show off his new card trick which only uses red cards, but every time he tries it a black card appears, no matter how many times he puts it back in the deck it keeps coming home (hence the name “The Commuter”) This is Chris' handling of the Homing Card. It can again be done impromptu which is a big plus for me. 9/10 Q.U.A.S.H.A.P.S The effect – I’m not going to patronise you with an explanation of the Hofzinser Ace Problem! Hofzinser Aces is an effect that every magician seems to have a variation of. Most of them that I have encountered are convoluted and could easily be streamlined for the same amount of impact. Chris' routine is very good and can be done impromptu. The visual impact of this is very good as well. The spectator sees you cleanly place their card reversed in the center of the deck, then its not there. Pimp! 9/10 Card to Head The effect – A card is selected and replaced into the deck and then found to be on top of a spectator’s head. Card Under drink, card to mouth, card to forehead are all card to impossible location routines. This is a quick little routine that I would use as part of a longer routine. 7/10 Bizarre Intro This next effect is one that I have made fantastic use of. It is completely inspired by John Guastaferro’s Bizarre Prequel which can be learnt on his fantastic DVD Brainstorm Volume 2, it also includes his Ballet Cut which was taught on Brainstorm Volume 1 but is first found in print in his highly acclaimed book “One Degree” – I thoroughly recommend checking out everything that Mr Guastaferro has released unless you don’t look good, solid, hard-hitting magic. This is Chris' amalgamation of ideas to create a smooth flow into Paul Harris' awesome Bizarre Twist. Chris included this effect to show that sometimes adding one move can clean up an effect. I like the idea in conjunction with the Bizarre Twist. 9/10 At the end of the ebook, Chris gives a few more ideas on how the effect can be used. Playing with this move got me thinking of a few different applications as well. Here are a few ideas off the top of my head: Card through table Card From Shoe Card from Spectators Pocket A signed card from a red deck shows up in a blue deck 4 twos instantly change into a single 8 I sent Chris an effect called Heavy Transpo that uses the Cradle Control in a cool way as well. He may or may not include it in the ebook in the future. If you are looking for a cool new sleight that can jump start your creativity, check out the Cradle Control. In a word: Bangadelic Donny |
