I'm not suggesting that anyone should just play the audio track and turn off their stage presence and stop their hard work. I'm saying the sound track literally gets laughs on its own so you don't have to be funny at all. Yes, it helps to have the facial expressions and to do the trick properly, but anyone will get laughs regardless of that.

The trick that apparently inspired Scott to develop this routine is the "Vanishing Bandanna". I've seen this performed badly many times, and never once seen it done well. I hope my presentation is above average - but the whole point about these effects with "pre-recorded instructions" is that the performer hams it up. Done badly the Vanishing Bandanna can be a rather bland effect, though it will always get a chuckle or two. I've just ordered "Shoe Business", and will try my best to make it "my own" by reacting to the instructions in an over-the-top manner, and plan to make lots of deliberate mistakes, wherever possible.
You simply can't expect any effect to make you funny, or to provide the comedy for you. It's all down to the performer to get the most out of a routine, and I'm quite sure "Shoe Business" is no exception. Very much looking forward to including this new routine in my shows, it sounds like a winner. ;) |

I never said it would be a hilarious routine if you sucked at being a showman. I have to admit I saw the Vanishing Bandanna performed a long time ago and I have ALWAYS HATED it because the performer just sucked. Regardless, there are some funny things in the audio track that get laughs on their own because they are just simply funny lines. You can't argue against it, it's just a fact. |

Yes, the routine is funny in and of itself, but if your acting and timing of your reactions are really on point, the more intense and rich the laughter will be. I touch on acting suggestions on the DVD.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on the 1st point. The same could be said of the 'Bandana´ trick but I've seen audiences moved to silence by that in the wrong hands. As for it being a 'fact'... well I could say the same thing about my point of view.... a contribution is needed by the performer for this to be funny ..it's just a fact. Unfortunately neither my statement or yours are facts. They are opinions. I base mine on my experience and I'm sure you base yours on your experience. Nothing wrong with an honest difference of opinion. And we can both agree with your statement that no one, " should just play the audio track and turn off their stage presence and stop their hard work." Kudos to Scott for including presentational tips in the dvd.

I agree that the performer should perform this with all he's got and get the best reactions he can, and I guess that's all that matters.

Thank you Puck for the response about the slush powder not being used. I love the vanishing bandana trick and have been using it in my show for the last 8 years. It is a great routine and it always gets laughs from the children and adults a like. I have a great slush powder routine and I just didn't want to get rid of it if this routine was similar to that method. Im ordering mine. Thank you Café for all your reviews regarding this product.

Since many people are saying they love the trick but don't really need the fake phone, we probably will just leave them out since they were just pennies. This way, the shipping charges will be less. We will change the shipping charges on the website. Win/win for everyone!

There is no "Win/Win" with magic consumers. Honestly if it's pennies, I'd leave it in. In a performance last weekend, I used my own phone. But I'm keeping the supplied phone in my stage bag, just in case! You never know, my phone could get stolen or lost before the show, and having that phone in my case could save my butt. Food for thought... |

I used to do the banana trick and now I feel ashamed, guilty, low-class, and dirty for doing it because it is lazy, uber-hack, and paint by numbers magic. I did the trick not because I liked it, but because I needed to "fill" my show for a few minutes. I didn't get into magic for that reason.
Some might thing they can make this your own. But let's be honest with ourselves about this. |

If Denny raves about this product then it must be strong.

Maybe someday I'll post a vid of my presentation, I get a whole lot more comedy out of the original routine.....my main tip for the Vanishing Bandanna is to squeeze the banana really hard when you fold it, so that it oozes out from the sides. Make it REALLY messy for a much funnier take. I also make lots of verbal comebacks and physical reactions during the pauses, as I'm "performing" the trick. I think my "Shoe Business" is due for delivery on Wednesday, I'm very much looking forward to putting this in my shows as soon as I possibly can! Potty |
