Looks like this trick won't be compatible in its current form with Canada dropping the penny. Does anybody think that if the penny was only recently phased out, it wouldn't look so illogical to have them in your pocket? or maybe ask for any multiple of 5 from one to a hundred?

Just use old Canadian pennies. Or get American pennies. As I recall, they are the same size. We still use old silver dollars and 50 cent pieces, even though those are rarely seen in circulation. Carrying some old pennies should not be a big deal.

There are lots of available "replacement gimmicks" online- now that you know the method and have made a purchase. Just find one that works with your currency. Oh wait, maybe I misunderstand. Pennies don't exist anymore? All transactions round to the .05?

Hi,
Sorry to bring this thread up again. I read in some of the posts here that this effect did not get a big reaction from spectators. Some even commented that this effect is not a magic effect. I just don't understand how this isn't a magic effect. Of course, if you just presented it like below, it might not get you a big reaction: (M = Magician, S = Spectator) M: Give me a number from 1 to 100. S: Okay, 23. M: I have some change in my pocket. (Takes out pocket change and counts it out on spectator's hand) M: ... 21, 22 and 23 cents! Exactly the number that you named! S: Cool. (With a polite smile) Now, I'm not a great magician (in my own opinion), but ever since I started learning magic as a kid from Bill Severn's books, I have learned that presentation is everything. Your presentation can amplify the effect in the spectator's mind and make it as awesome as you want it to be. I don't own this trick and not even sure if it will work here with my Malaysian coins. However, I can immediately think of 4 possible ways that you can present this and you are free to use these presentations. I'm sure that any one of these below is much better than the presentation above. Here goes... 1. Telepathy - Thought Transference ----------------------------------- M: Do you believe in telepathy- the transfer of thoughts from one person to another? S: No. M: I will try a little experiment. Just clear your mind and I will attempt to send you a number that I am thinking of. Just to give you a clue, it's a number from 1 to 100. The moment a number pops into your head, say it out loud. You have to be quick. Ready? S: Okay, I'm ready. M: I'm thinking of my number now. Go! S: 65! M: You're absolutely correct. That's my number. S: (Groans... thinking this is a joke) M: Wait, I'll prove it to you. Earlier on, I counted the change in my pocket and I sent that number to you. Let me get out the change and count it. (counts out the exact matching change). 2. Fate ------- M: Do you believe in fate? That everything that happens is predestined for a reason? S: No (or yes, depending on the spectator) M: For example, maybe it's fate that you and I are talking here at this moment. Let's try a little experiment. Just say out a number from 1 to 100. S: 82. M: Maybe it's fate that you chose that number. You could have chosen any number but you chose that one. M: Now I'm going to take out all the change in my pocket and count them out on your hand. Would it be more than coincidence, maybe even fate if the amount of change is the exact number that you named? (proceeds to conclude the trick as usual) 3. Dream -------- M: I had a weird dream last night. I dreamed that I was doing a trick for you here just like this. S: Yeah, sure you were. M: Yes, really. I'll prove it to you. In my dream I asked you to name a number from 1 to 100. Go ahead. S: Okay, 34. M: No way! That's incredible! You know what- you named 34 also in my dream last night. S: Yeah, right. (thinking this is a big joke) M: I knew things might come true from my dream so I brought the exact amount of pocket change to equal your number 34. Here, let me count them out for you. (proceed as usual). 4. Time Travel -------------- M: Do you believe in time travel? S: No. Are you nuts? M: This may be hard to believe but with some concentration, I think I can travel 5 minutes into the past. Let's try an experiment. Just name a number from 1 to 100 out loud. S: 28. M: Okay, now I'm going to focus my mental energy and travel back 5 minutes to the time when I was in the washroom. (or somewhere else) (Stays very still for a few moments like you're frozen) M: (Jolts as if you just woke up from your trance) Okay, I'm back from the past. Of course, you didn't see anything because everything happened in just a split second of your time. (You can use some mumbo-jumbo from any time-travel movie for your patter) S: Yeah, right. M: Here, I'll prove it to you. When I went back 5 minutes, I actually placed the exact amount of change into my pockets to match your chosen number. Now I'm back here in the present and I'm going to count out my change on to your hand. (proceed as usual) These 4 presentations may sound cheesy but at least, they are much more entertaining and have some kind of plot. Hope you enjoy them. Thanks.

I bought it, but don't really perform it. My criticism is that I prefer to have more stuff in my pockets, and this one consumes a pocket for the handling that I'm comfortable with. I've heard others criticize that the method is exactly what they hoped it wasn't. The gimmick is very "manual" for lack of a better term. Others have complained that it's too much "futsing around" in your pocket. And I have a buddy that complains of the noise. However, you do make an astounding point that a trick is really what you make of it, and how you dress it up. I'm just not sure if that's worth an overpriced $5 gimmick and a dvd that points out the obvious. I just checked the price. $75? I hope I didn't pay that. Maybe that's the problem, the price point. I say it's worth $20-25. |

It's an excellent effect and I use it frequently in one-one-situations. There are no noise problems when it is handled properly, nor is there ANY noticeable "fussing around" in the pocket. (Although I suggest you perform the effect wearing slacks or dress pants and not a tight pair of jeans.)
I highly recommend it to experienced performers. |

Interesting. My right pocket is always reserved for PW but wondering how easy this would be with me left hand....

This never fails to get super reactions. I use the often on the boat and plays great for both audiences whether they are seated at a table or standing. A great effect to open with.

This effect absolutely rocks.
For those who say that they aren't getting much of a reaction out of this, they must be doing something wrong. It has NEVER failed to elicit a strong reaction for me. This is easily one of my favorite purchases ever. I regularly perform at 3 different venues every week and it has been put to very good use. |

As with any effect, it's only as good as the performer. A machine gun is a good weapon... but is a great weapon if used by a professional.
