I didn't know where to put this, but my kid show friends would probably know. I recall that someone put out a DVD on teaching magic where only white gloves were shown and you could have the DVD personalized with your name and photo on it for resale.
Has anyone every used this? And is it still available? Any info would be appreciated or advice on where to list this on the Café. Thanks in advance. Jef

Hi Jef -
You are asking about the Instant Author DVD. There have been threads in both the "Tricky Business" and "The Little Darlings" areas. There were a couple that no longer seem to be available: - Magic Hands DVD - Magic Masterclass DVD (there were 2 of these) The Magic Masterclass DVDs were from Andrew Gerard and Paul Romhany. Websites for those products have been shut down for a while now. Here's a third option that is still around: - Michael Bourada's Magician's DVD Michael is a member of the Café (Rada) and sometimes posts the license for sale in the "DVD & Video tapes for sale or trade" area. I checked, and it's not listed there right now. So, you might try contacting him directly or through the site link I gave. Note - I haven't seen any of these products. - Donald

I bought Rada's product. It's decent. The only issue I have with it is that the narration seems very slow...almost like when it was duped there was something wrong with the machine. It's almost irritatingly slow. I keep meaning to contact Rada...but then have a brain fart and forget.
Other than that, I think it will serve the purpose. Oh...the other thing that my wife pointed out is that on the first trick or two, the narrator tells the child to "cast a magic spell", or something like that. This might make some parents a bit nervous, with too close an association with witchcraft.

To change the direction just a tad: what has been your success with selling these DVD's? On and off over the past 15 years, I have offered up both souvenir video tapes and DVD's that teach magic. For a while I even had a looped video that showed some of the effects but not the explanations. They have never really been hot sellers. I have had much greater success with actual tricks.
I think that people (especially kids) want something that they can open up and start doing right away. The souvenir is an impulse item and having to wait to view a DVD does not satisfy that need. But whatever the reason, they have not sold well for me. For those of you that have had success with these, what did you find was a good sales technique? |

I've never sold a DVD, but have tried books. I found actual props or tricks sell best. Kids are probably buying them for the "toy factor" and not so much the learning factor (as we might wish). So the simpler and easier, the better. Brightly-colored kids props and a magic wand do well. The less skill required, the better.

I have researched the DVD and the book my McGreggy.
I will have to do some thinking as to what might work best. Thanks for all the input. Regards, Jef

Hi Guys,
Yes, I have the DVD for sale after shows...BOR Custom ones. I am offering it for sale right now if you're interested - PM me. Mike, I have altered the DVD a little bit, the narration has a distinct voice, I'm not sure it would be irritating, it is meant to be mysterious and I've had people say they like it. I guess everyone is different though. That said, you can visit my new site - http://www.makemoneyaftershows.com Best, Michael |

RSVP also have a DVD available now http://www.rsvpmagic.com/product_making_magic.html
I have had the Magic Hands DVD and came across the RSVP one whilst looking for an upgrade from Magic Hands. Whilst Magic Hands is still going well, it's looking a bit dated in some areas which is why I am now looking at upgrade options. |

I offer DVD where I teach magic tricks and it has a show on there as well. I sell it for 10.00. I have sold thousands of these over the years. Let me say spend/invest and do your OWN DVD and not just hands. I see parents all the time that say the watch my DVD over and over again. The person buying your DVD cannot connect with just someones hands and different voice. if they are buying your DVD it is more than likely because they liked YOU. So don't take the cheep way out. Do it right and you will make more money and have more fans in the long run.

Ken...I think you just hit the nail on the head. It always seemed a little disingenuous to me to sell "my" DVD, but have it be someone else doing the teaching.
I will have to think about making my own, I guess. One more thing on the To Do list. <sigh>

Ken is right, of course. YOUR custom video is best. It's also a lot of expense and work.
Perhaps there is a happy medium. Would it be possible to dub your own voice narration over the existing "hands" video? If the video and tricks are good quality, perhaps having you introduce the video and to the VO could work. |

The only problem is that it can be costly and that's why investing in a Instant Author BOR DVD is sometimes an option that can't be overlooked. For the cost in which I offer it, and the amount of money you will make long term, its certainly worth it. But back to my point, if you can make your own and have the resources to do it well, I strongly suggest it too, because as Ken says, its definitely a great way to connect with the viewer. |

But the price is worth the professional camera work, and editing. Plus, RSVP will create a DVD Cover for you with your name and photo edited into it, that looks equally professional. For me, I agree with Ken if you have the money to throw down. Otherwise, I think RSVP has a great looking product.

Cost is relative. If you make more than is costs, it's worth it. That is the ONLY way to judge value.
As I stated earlier, I made my own but they have not been good sellers. But I live in the "Tightwad Belt." |

Ken said that he sells his DVD for $10 when he does BOR. What was your price? The reason I ask, is I've seen others try to sell them for $15 or $20. That could make a difference in the amount of sales. - Donald

$10. But recently I have tried a "Show Special" of $8. I also tried selling them in a "Package Deal" with other cheaper tricks. They simply are not a good product for me. I also included a free card trick (2 card monte) to try to get rid of the things, but even that would not move them.
I had them in the display case at a restaurant where I worked, and only sold a few over a LONG time. They are attractively packaged, with a very professional look (the disc is even printed as opposed to labels.) I believe that kids simply want the instant gratification of have a physical trick rather than having to "learn" something. |

Wands and magic tricks are best sellers for me, too. Way more than my activity books. (A similar problem to the DVDs, I guess.)
Recently, I created a bundle that included a wand, a trick, and a book. Those sold better than individual items, and I was happy to sell some books as a part of the bundle. That bundle was at a lower price point than my magic kit, which includes several tricks, the book, the wand, and a photo. I think I'll keep the bundle in my standard BOR line. Have you thought of including something "better" with the DVD bundle? I'll bet a wand would have more appeal than a 2 card monte. - Donald
