If someone hands me a pack of cards and asks me to do something, I first take notice if the pack has white borders. If it does, then I usually do any of the applications of the "Head Over Heels" move found in Try the Impossible by Simon Aronson.
If the deck doesn't have white borders, my go to effect would be "Marlo's Rosini" out of Pasteboard Presto. I like these because they are very quick, direct, and disarming. Plus, these usually leave people wanting to see more and if that's the case then I will go into longer and more involved items. David |

I normally do an ambitious card routine and out of this world, to the layman the latter just seems so impossible.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

I would either do my variation on the "Stop!"-Trick (If there is enough time) or simply change a random card into a thought of card in the spectators hand.

I usually do one of these:
-Barrie Richardson's ACAAN -Out of this world -Triumph -Ambitious card Here in Finland nobody has Bicycle cards except magicians so ambitious card is usually not an option and that's also one reason why I do Out of this world so often. ~Atte
Human being, magician, student and squash player. Order may vary depending on the situation, but usually first in the list is "human being".

I have been doing magic for 50 years +/- and I have never had anyone ever hand me a deck of cards. The only exception to this is if I am at a poker game, in which case I am expecting it. I mean really how many people (other than magicians) carry cards around with them? But to answer your question I always have some wax on me so I do a quick card to ceiling, or wall, and move on to other stuff... In all those years I have only learned 4 card tricks, just in case someone asks. To me cards are just not a normal item. It is the same reason I never did any stage magic with items that look like "magicians props". Think about it, have you ever seen a zig zag box in normal real life? The answer is NO people know it was specifically built for the Magician. I believe this is why Houdini was so good, normal things like, chains, locks, rope, packing crates, milk cans etc etc is what people were familiar with. He didn't rise to fame with his outstanding card tricks/manipulations... Now if your audience is magicians, then that is a different story... To me a guy pulling out a deck of cards and asking "do you want to see a card trick'? is like the people who take out 52 pictures of their grand kids and ask "do you want to see a picture of my grand kid"? OK all you card guys can bash me now:) Hmm did I just say all that out loud?

It takes just a bit of prep, but if you feel like you might be asked to perform, I might sneak a peek at a book or magazine lying around. Then if given the cards I can cull under the pretense of seeing if they're all mixed up. Do some false shuffles or cuts and you're all set to force some cards for a nice little book test. You can also get the cards you need under the pretense of doing a simple quick tricks and then transition saying card tricks maybe aren't your thing but we'll use them to do something a bit different.
All it really takes is getting in the habit of checking your surroundings and 10 seconds of prep. |

Probably either ambitious card, geminii twins, force a card and read their mind or, recently I've been trying topsy turvy or something like that. (First trick in royal road to card magic)
I would pick one of these depending on the time I have and the number of people. But I have only once been handed a deck of cards. It was at a party and I pretty much performed all of the above plus one or two others for my little cousins. It helped that the deck was a bicycle deck from the turn of the millennium. Really good quality deck. |

I do a trick where their card ends up between their hands first, though I don't know where I got it from, and I have changed it a lot so only the very basic premise is the same. If I have my wallet on me, in there I have small cards, and from there it is easy enough to do a trick where I cough out a small card. I was once thrown out of a Geography lesson for doing that trick because she was so disgusted at trying to figure out how I could have done the trick.

Considering a real life situation where I am totally unprepared and someone hands me over a deck in sad state with a few missing, I envision doing maximum 3 effects. I would like to present stuff which is different than what lay people expect with cards typically, that is "pick a card type" of outine. I would also like to estalish that rather than doing an obvious "sleight of hand" show or a "trick card" presentation (which is improbable as I a using a borrowed deck anyway), I would like to present some magic, in the sense that impossible stuff would happen in THEIR hands. On that note I would like to present any three of the following:
1. Quick opener: Jack Sandwich 2. Prediction effect: Shuffle Bored. 3. Transposition: Dr. Daley's last trick. 4. Pick a card where they get to be the magician as well: Duplicity Additionally I also have Lorayne's "Stop" and "Gemini Twins" in my Kitty. They require dealing, so one can be thrown in certainly. If you have any dealing effect which you feel gets sronger reactions than these 2, please let me know. |

Depends on the situation. If I'm not in the mood or don't have the time to do more than one trick, I pick a quick one and be done with it (usually Mountebank Miracle). If I have the time and the inclination to do more than one, I follow with Gemini Twins or Kli Ban's "The Spectator Finds your Card" and wrap things up with The Ambitious Card.
The one circimstance separate from the rest is if it takes place at a bar and the people who want to see a trick are half in the bag (I know it sounds rare, but this has happened to me four or five times), in which case I absolutely revel in performing the simplest dreck possible. Even tricks that a child should be able to figure out work like a charm when the laymen you're doing them for are working on their sixth or seventh beer. The trick I love to use in this situation? "Lovebirds" from Scarne on Card Tricks. |
