Yep, Shock Magic is a book. Sean Miller also has a Blockhead kit online, but I can't remember the site name. http://www.beardedfireeater.com ?

It is just as freaky to use a cocktail stirrer if you are in a bar, as some of my friends will confirm.
Just to add that I learned it from Shock Magic too, I didn't particularly like the other things in there, but I really like the nail especially when combined with a blood capsule. It depends what response you are looking for!

Does the book Shock Magic tell you a way of actually driving a nail into your nose, or does it use an illusion? I'm wondering as I actually stick the nail right up there, into my sinus cavity.
(usual disclaimer - make sure you know what you're doing before trying this. Getting a nail out of your brain could be a bit messy). |

Warm the nail in your hand first, and slowly stick it in. Don't force it, just do it slowly as you get comfortable with it. If you feel a little wozzy or blood starts to gush out, you have gone too far.

Just a little tidbit here. Neil mentions using a coctail stirrer at a bar, but you can also use a chopstick if you're out for Chinese. I have done this many times --I mention how Chinese food helps clear my sinuses out, then proceed to insert the chop stick while using a teacup as a hammer.

An important note before you try this effect. The nail goes into your sinus cavity, so if you have any germs on the object, they are going into an ideal breeding center. So, please DISINFECT before you insert. I know this sounds silly, but I know of one performer who spent 3 months trying to get rid of an infection caused by having a spectator inspect a nail.
Chop sticks and cocktail stirrers are perfect items for transferring germs. Get a nail, have it chrome plated and disinfect it before use. This makes the effect stronger, as many will suspect that you use the opportunity to switch objects. Bye for now Harold

I've just realised that the nail doesn't actually go into a sinus cavity - it is the nasal passage between your nose and the back of your throat. Sinus cavities are just that, little air pockets in the skull. Wouldn't want to shove a nail in those.
Getting the nail chrome, or nickel, plated is a good idea. When you have mastered it, there is plenty of fun to be had. Check out Brad Byers if you can. Slainte ML |

The “Blockhead” act is simplicity itself! The big secret is that there is NO big secret! OK, there is a “little” secret – you don’t stick objects UP your nose, you slide them straight back! No folding or gimmicked items needed! I suspect that the Blockhead act was discovered by a 12-year-old boy trying to impress his friends.
I have an 8-year-old godson that taught himself the Blockhead act by watching Johnny Fox perform it at the Maryland Renaissance Fair. He has been doing it since he was 7! I suspect that he will teach himself sword swallowing by the time he is 12. Lucky for him, he has a mother that is “with it” and several relatives (and one Godfather) that can keep him safe as he learns. I learned to push a nail into my nose when I was in high school. I had never heard of a Blockhead act or seen one performed. I was looking at a cross section of the human head in a biology book and noticed the huge cavity above the pallet and behind the nose. I asked my teacher what was in there and he said, “Nothing, it’s basically hollow.” It seemed logical to me that something that could fit into the nostril could be slid back into that cavity! So I tried! I used a pencil (yellow number 2 if you are interested) and VIOLA I was the king of the Gross-Out’s! I am still remembered for that trick almost 40 years later! By the way, I perform the Blockhead act using a power drill. It is really adds a nice touch and seems even more difficult. Actually it is no more difficult than pounding a nail! Yes there is a secret to using the drill. I have filed all the edges of the bit off! No accidental cuts. Over the years, I have performed the stunt using borrowed nails, screwdrivers, Bic pens, drill bits (attached to the drill and running), and several other items. I have never had a problem getting an infection or even a cold related to performing the stunt. I also will push a 260 (doggie) balloon into the nose such that it drops down the back of the throat. I can grasp the balloon from inside my mouth and pull it forward thus having it run into my nose and out my mouth. Now the trick here is to inflate a small bubble in one end of the balloon and thus give it some substance to aid in pushing it in. Once you have the balloon end hanging out of your mouth, you can push the bubble (hanging out your nose0 and transfer it to the end hanging out your mouth and back again! IT IS REALLY GROSS and wonderful! I don’t do this stuff all that often but I do perform it. Usually when challenged at a party!

What width of implement are you trying to shove in there? You may be using an object that is too wide for the opening of your cavity (no jokes please!). I started with a plastic chop-stick. As it is tapered, I could get used to a wider and wider object in there. After a bit of very gentle probing I found I could easily slip in 5" no problem.

I've been trying this lately. Everytime I do I feel like I want to sneeze! Anyone have any tips for overcoming this?
Wow! I just tried it again and sneezed harder than I think I ever have. I think I rattled my brain loose.

Yep, getting over the sneeze reflex is the hardest bit - keep trying as it shouldn't take you long. My brain was loose anyway, so the severity of the sneeze didn't cause me too many problems...

You might be careful Desmanthus because if you have a sharp nail up your nose when you sneeze you run the risk of impaling one of your audience members and that's just plain wrong. <g>

This has nothing to do with the original question, but how far back is the cavity for block head. I can get about three inches back and then run into a wall. I have seen others go further back. Does it differ from person to person?
Don't let them know how much it really hurts.

Yep, it does depend on your own anatomy. If the nail won't go any further, then don't force it. 3" is still plenty to freak out an audience!
