It drives me up a wall when people jump in on a thread and don't bother to read each and every post, no matter how long the thread may be, and then ask questions that have already been answered. We have all of this instant information at our fingertips, and yet, some people are just too freaking lazy to go through it and instantly want to be spoon fed more upon demand. Sorry for my rant, and it certainly is not directed at you. Just a pet peeve of mine.

Whoops.....sorry about the double post! No idea how that happened. I still can't understand why one is not allowed to delete a post within a short time, and or no one has yet responded. On most other forum sites, including mine, you are allowed to do so.

Simply the BEST video of them all!
C'est tres bien! The freedom with which Eric allowed the spectators to use the knife to tap, scrape, cut and jab at the steel block was both exciting and heart stopping at the same time lol Very cool and funny - so direct too. I don't know if I would ever let the spectator go gonzo with a knife on my IR block - but in watching so many reactions it was just a blast. Thanks for sharing this - sensational!

Gotta love Eric! His handling of the IR was about perfect!

I love the misdirection during the work and letting the spectator pull the knife out of the box. Also letting the spectator remove the block from the box. Great job, Eric!
Eric is so fun to watch, whatever he is doing. (Make sure you watch his video with "Bizzaro's Non-Toxic) I'm also reluctant to hand a metal knife and the block of steel to a spectator. I think it's an awesome approach, but not sure how the block would hold up over time. I did buy an extra at "Magic Live", so I am considering keeping one prisine, and maybe letting the other one get totally abused. Could be a lot of fun! Time would tell if it would mess things up. I performed this tonight for a room of Junior Highers. They freaked out and were talking about it as they left. It has a powerful impact. When I "gave them the power" they were able to push the quarter through as well. Good stuff!

On a subtle level, handing them the knife as well as the block means they have no free hands to start "investigating"

That is the one thing that occurred to me as well Steve. As well as letting them take it out of the box themselves! Box in one hand and IR in the other.
I just had a thought, that you could borrow someones business card and do IR with it. Would be a nice wee souvenir for them to keep at the end of the trick! |

I think using a knife is a great approach but be warned if you are going to give the knife to the spectator, your liability insurance people will not like it one bit. On a less killjoy note...the performance is brilliant.

I think after 30 pages there is allowed to be one voice of dissent. Jamie is a cool guy; this is a very well made product that is technically simple to perform (no deception at all in the advertising) and at least as importantly this is a marketing juggernaut. To me the necessary presentation of the trick (penetration then reveal) is that this usually comes across as a pleasant puzzle. Albeit one that cannot usually be figured out. I have not have anyone "figure" it out but deceiving the spectator is not the same as entertaining them or making them feel a moment of magic. In addition it is too heavy for most pockets. I have not seen a video on this site that has made me feel otherwise. I realize I am preaching against the choir as these threads are filled with repetitive posts from IR lovers but there you go.

Paul, if restaurants are allowed to hand out knives then so am I.
My knife is not nearly as sharp since it is a theatrical prop. I like to hand each item out to separate people whenever possible. Interesting how most of the heat is usually on the BOX.

Hiya Xcath1! I wouldn't call it a voice of dissent but rather a voice of a respectful, thoughtful, and honest opinion. And that's always welcome.

Xcath1, ways to carry the IR are mentioned in earlier posts.
I agree that IR by itself is more of a pleasant puzzle as you say. But when you incorporate it into a full routine, it becomes a miracle. When the audience is convinced that the box is full of cards, this takes on a whole new dimension.

Hey,
I'm in love with my IR too (why don't ya marry it? Pee-Wee Herman fans, lol), but it was nice to hear a couple of reasonable cons from Xcath1without this thread turning into an all out flame war. I see that happen too many times here and there is no need for it. I agree with Xcath1, but I'm probably still gonna marry my IR, lol, because it's not leaving my side. |

But I would disagree on the "moment of magic" part - nealy everyone I show IR to gets that initial stunned look when they initially see the steel pop out. What else would one call that moment - other than magic? Moment of disbelief? Moment of confusion? The prestige? IR is like a mini illusion in your hand... This aint no card trick. Its a little miracle. Thamls for your honest feedback, but IR is so much more than a puzzle. Course I'm one of the Kool-Aid drinking fans here
