I finally read the whole book of MINIMALISM by David Devlin. It is a David’s life time collection of routines both magic and mentalism.
There are 25 items offered here and a few I really found interesting. I lean toward mentalism these days even though I have done magic for almost 30 years. This book ranges from card effects, cup and balls and mind reading. Talk about a nice overall book! I will just talk about a few items that caught my eye. The effect titled, ‘Blind Date’ introduces a force count that I have never seen before that was both interesting and useable. ‘Case file’ is a stage routine that have members of the audience acting out a murder who done it. This would play really big and seems to be quite entertaining. I like this type of routines where people can play roles and have fun. ‘Coincidence and Fate’ is a real treat because it involves ESP cards along with dice. The cards are mixed and dice are rolled. The number on the dice tells how many cards are removed from the deck to fine the selected card. Now a second person does the very same thing and both cards match. When everyone thought that was it, the performer points out the envelope that has been lying on the table throughout the routine. It is open and a card dumped out. It matches the two spectator’s cards proving that their two cards weren’t just a coincidence but an act of fate. ‘ESP Trick’ uses five ESP cards that are laid on the table in a row. There is also a coin envelope that contains a prediction. Spectator eliminates a card one at a time until only one is left. It matches the card that is in the coin envelope. Easy to do and is another good prediction. ‘Die-Lemma’ really looks like a great effect for walk around. It uses cards and five dice that have card suits and values on them. The deck of cards is cut and a card selected. The dice are rolled to determine a playing card. I bet you can figure out the rest! ‘Four Thoughters’ I really like this routine! This is an IMPOSSIBLE prediction that will knock people for a loop! Some will read this and dismiss it because of how it works. Let me tell you something about this type of routine, professionals use this idea from time to time and it pays off in repeated bookings. There is a jumbo playing card in a stand with its back toward the audience. A person is brought onstage and they are ask to select four additional people from the audience. These four people stand at their seats and then the person on stage is asked to eliminate people one at a time until only one remains standing. This is done and the performer asked the standing person to think of a playing card. The color is chosen (black or red) and then the suit is named. Next the standing person is asked to name a number or a court card. Once a card has been freely chosen, the jumbo card is removed from the easel, and given to the on-stage volunteer. He turns it around, and it proves to be the chosen card. “Guilty as Sin Aces’ is a cutting to the aces that can be played as a magic effect or a psychic routine if you just do a little thinking about it. I also like this because it seems as if you had mess the routine up and had to stop for a moment to gather your thoughts. Then you continue and knock them over the head with the ending! I like this very much because of the magician in trouble idea. ‘Intuition’ is an updated version of ‘Premonition’ by Eddie Joseph. Your wallet and a boxed deck of playing cards are played on the table. A person is asked to select a card and to name it out loud. They are then ask to come on stage. The spectator removes the cards from the box and counts the cards. There is one missing. The performer opens the wallet and removes a card….. Yea, once again it is the named card! ‘Equi-Lock’ is a nice method of forcing a key from many. ‘MIND CONTROL’ is an essay on the act of using equivoque. I found this to be interesting reading. ‘State of the Union’ is a nice method of forcing a card. Fifty states (USA) are used in this routine. You have cards that have a name of a state written on it. There is an envelope with a card inside lying on the table. The person selects a card and it matches the card in the envelope. Nice routine but I see myself doing this with picture cards. Once a card has been selected ask the person to look and imagine themselves in the picture. You then describe the picture as if you are in it. ‘Teleportation’ is a cool tear the corner off a card to impossible location routine. ‘Time Out’ is the kind of stuff that I like very much. A prediction is written down and a spectator is asked to imagine a large clock face floating in front of them. They are asked what hour then see and then to select two numbers to represent the minutes. The prediction is open and read out loud. The prediction matches the time that the spectators merely imagine in their mind. 'Act of B’Wavery’ Using playing cards, a spectator calls out any four of a kind and these cards are placed face up on the table. The spectator eliminates 3 cards and they are turned face down showing that they have red backs. The selected card is turned over and is found to have a blue back. And just for the fun of it, the 3 eliminated cards are turn face up and are now blank faces. This is David’s thinking on Phil Goldstein’s B’Wave. It uses a full deck and I like the idea of the spectator calling out a four of a kind. There is a lot of magic going on here. There is a little prep work involved but is worth it because of the effect that is created. ‘Salad Dressing’ This is a VERY visional looking routine. Looks like magic and is really easy to do once you are set up. ‘Vanishing Point’ There are a lot of magic going on here with only 4 cards! This is the kind of stuff that I like, not complicated to watch, simple and direct and to the point. This would be great for walk around. ‘Zodiac’ A nice way of arriving at a person’s Zodiac sign. You use a Zodiac deck and another deck that has numbers. Because this depends on two people, it would play great for couples. I would have the lady Zodiac sign used and with the help of her date/spouse they also pick the same sign proving that they are very in tune with each other. ‘Word for Word’ I LOVED this idea! 52 cards with 52 DIFFERENT words printed on them are used. The cards are mixed and a spectator selects ANY card/word. The performer is able to tell he spectator what word they have freely chose. This is a really great idea that would play big. ‘Jump Back Jokers, no wait, aces!’ A very simple routine where a joker magical jumps back to its 3 other mates (jokers) and then turn into Aces, simple and direct. I will review David's Cup and Ball routine once I find a set of cups to use. I haven't seen mine in years! Best Ray |
