In another thread, you made a comment that your hope is to leave magic in a better state than it was when you started. This is my philosophy, as well.
That being said, I miss the days of the "classic" magicians like Harry Blackstone, Jr. It seems that the emphasis these days seems to be on the weird and the extreme. While I certainly enjoy watching these types of performances, it seems to me that our foundation and history is being forgotten in the wake of camera angles and patter like "look, look, look, watch this!". As I build my first full-length illusion show (which is taking forever due to cost and lack of funds with which to pay), my concept is to return to these roots. My show is called "The Dream", and is the story (my story) of a little boy whose dream it was to become a professional magician. In the show, I pay tribute to several magicians who were a big influence on me in my early days of performing. Those men are Eugene "Quacky The Clown" Curtis (the fair clown who showed me my first ever magic trick--the magic coloring book), Doug Henning, Harry Blackstone, Jr, and David Copperfield. I have had the extreme pleasure of having met all of these gentlemen, and want to put together a show that honors them, and gives a little of their flavor. I don't intend, necessarily, to do THEIR illusions...only to do the illusions I do in a way that is reminiscent of them. Thoughts?

It’s certainly a good way to go. It’s very ambitious and that always a good start. But please remember that the goal of those great magicians was, and is still in the case of David Copperfield, to be unique so always remember that a way to pay a tribute to them is by finding your own unique approach. In music anyone singing covers is not usually seen as someone doing a tribute but someone that doesn’t have original songs.
I’m not saying it’s not a good idea but maybe I would leave David out and go only for creators that passed away. Just an idea. |

My intention was not to do David's stuff, but to pay tribute to his influence on me.
I appreciate the great advice!
