Everyone that watched Fred Kaps perform at lectures and the videos on YouTube see this miracle of card magic for stage and immediately ask, "Where can I learn the card trick?". Kaps was always honest and open and said you can find it in the little booklet of tricks left out of the excellent book on card magic "Expert Card Technique" by Jean Hugard and Frederick Braue. This booklet is Called "Show Stoppers with Cards" published by Magic Unlimited a defunct company owned by Lloyd E. Jones. Why these tricks was left out of the tome of the original production, I have no idea, as all eleven items are of the same caliber as the parent publication.
Fred Kaps performs the Homing Card as exactly described in this little publication. I would imagine the reason is because it cannot be improved on in any fashion. The moves are unique to any other card trick, it is intended for stand-up performance and it is very entertaining. Kaps added his excellent acting ability and emotional conveyance to the audience to get every ones attention, making it a masterpiece. I want to do the effect with Jumbo playing cards, this is not a problem until the final transformation. Does anyone know of a playing card color change that can be done with jumbo playing cards? I know Mike Caveny created his 'The Homing Card Comes Home' in his book "Magicomedy", that effect actually reduces the number of cards, and actully changes the plot and length of the trick. This I found not satisfactory to the original. The original is perfect in execution as well as the climax, but it would be even better with the use of jumbo playing cards. Anyone have any ideas for the final color change effect using jumbo playing cards. |

Bill,
May I suggest that you consider the new Phoenix Parlour Deck from CardShark. I picked up a couple of these decks at FFFF and have been working on the Homing Card, or a variant thereof. They are a bit bigger than a poker size deck, but have very large suit/value markings. Those markings are, I believe, the same size as a Bicycle Jumbo deck. The size permits use of most of the sleights you already use, but the markings are large enough for bigger audiences. Just a thought... Mark Posted: Jul 24, 2011 9:59am One other reference is the Homing Card DVD from Stevens Magic, which has 2 jumbo card versions and 3 regular card routines. Performers include Billy MaComb, Trevor Lewis, Also Colombini, Jim Krenz and Antonio Ferragut Hurtado. Mark Posted: Jul 25, 2011 10:26am O good heavens... forgive my typing. Of course, I meant Billy McComb and Aldo Colombini. Mark |

Thanks Mark for your references, do you know, assuming you have the Stevens DVD, are the 2 jumbo versions change the handling of the trick.
The only solution I have come up with is the old flap card, made like the Acrobatic Card from years ago. The problem is you are left with a single card in your hand. Is there a way to work the climax with a card switch of some kind re-handling the other cards? There is rough and smooth and double sided, I am thinking maybe a combination of these may bring around an instant change with jumbo cards. |

BOB SHEETS sells a version with large cards. He did it for us at the Den Haag FISM where Dick Koornwinder and I did a lecture on Kaps. Sheets did it and it played beautifully. Trevor Lewis also has a version with jumbo cards.

Pete, after doing a Google search, this was a printed lecture trick Sheets sold at a Fred Kaps honor gathering. They were not sold widely. I did read maybe it is on some DVD of Bob Sheets on cards, but have not confirmed this to be actual fact.
Bob Sheets used Trevor Lewis routine as on the aforementioned DVD by Stevens, but I can see exactly how that working is accomplished just buy watching the video on YouTube. It fails at showing the finale card on both sides, displacing all theories as to method. Thanks for you input, but it is not what I am looking for in a miracle ending. Posted: Jul 26, 2011 5:02am Emailed Bob Sheets, awaiting his response. He did not actually use Jumbo Cards, but the Angelo cards sold by El Duco. These are just a larger card then a standard. I want to use actual Jumbo Playing Cards like Piatnek brand. |

Hegblini... I was serious... if you see the routine, Imho, you, based on the knowledge you display in so many messages, you should be able to figure it out.

Let me make sure I understand you. You want to be holding a single card and have it change and then show both sides, a face on one and a back on the other, right?

Pete, that is correct. I can only think of the old acrobatic card type gimmick, but it may show to much.

Pete, change the black card to a red card. Or change a double face card to a back.

Pete, I will go with the one that works the best and is not so obvious as the Trevor Lewis handling.
Will a top change work some how? |

Michael Baker informed me that he has worked out a version of the Homing Card with regular cards. He did this only by watching the Kaps' video on YouTube. I obtained his version and remarkably it is a unique and different handling then the original, and yet keeps the original context of the effect.
This totally surprised me that he could rework the handling and keep the routine, so there is more then one way to "skin a cat" as the clique goes. I would totally advise anyone interested in this effect to check out Michael Baker's version. He does have one bold move, but it totally works with his handling. Michael Baker calls his version the Famous Five Card Trick, you can check it out on his site and take a look at his wonderful craftsmanship with his wood products. This woodwork is far beyond any I have seen from such manufacturers as Thayer and Owen magic. Scroll down to Famous Five Card Trick, then keep scrolling to feast your eyes on some wonderful magic props. http://www.themagiccompany.com/cat_main.html |

Posted: Jul 26, 2011 5:02am Received an email from Bob Sheets today, he says he has a DVD video of the routine Pete Biro mentioned and will sell me a copy. I will invest in this version to see if it will work for me. He did not mention if he could provide the lecture note version in written text. From Bob Sheets comments, I believe it is the same handling as was found on the Internet of his presentation, back spinning a playing a card. I am not a back spinner card catcher, but we will see. |

Just received the Bob Sheets DVD on the Homing Card this afternoon. It is very different then the Brauer/Kaps handling in the booklet. It is a very workable version of the effect and he covers everything in the handling. The video is made on his computer with him sitting in front of the monitor. The quality is good, and he has the handling broken down into sections for easy learning.
His routine is 5 minutes plus long, and his facial expressions are excellent. This is the 1st time I have seen Bob Sheets, so it was a delight to see him and his personality on screen. I would recommend this DVD for this trick, as it is a good all around trick. You can do it close-up and stand-up or on stage. It comes with sample poker size cards all for $27.00 postage paid from Bob Sheets himself. If you would like a trick that is funny and has some mystery inserted, then try this version out. The trick lends to all kinds of personalities and from serious to goofy acting. It all depends on your style. It packs small and plays big as they say. Give it a try. |
