Is it common for slates to be such an investment -- or are the high prices based on age and collectability?

Certainly the maker, rarity, and age can make a difference, but I think this is a question of quality. While the workings of spirit slates are relatively simple, if made poorly, they'll not last long or worse, malfunction. Poor joints, or an ill-fit gimmick can either affect the life of the slates, or ruin your routine if the gimmick doesn't move right. I've had cheap sets and quality sets...there is a big difference.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Dave powell's ones are beautiful...
I also got an original set a5ish size made/sold by corinda... puting the chalk in never made much sense to me...chalk dust though...
I've asked to be banned

I doubt anyone does a student discount.
I'll have to dig around in my personal library and see if I can manage with something more impromptu, but with the same aesthethic appeal.
