Banachek? He is wonderful for Mentalism... unless theres been a MASSIVE change in his persona in the last 48 hours? Can someone explain?
I call myself "Thomas Cooper" here because this stops the magic café appearing when people google my stage name.
Does anyone else find the term "Special User" to be a bit condescending? |

Yes and no, more of the latter lately.

Jim, isn't this show airing tonight? The ad I saw said it airs "Wednesday at 10/9 Central".

Getting rid of phoney psychics who defraud the public is always good for magic, beginning with Houdini and currently with Banachek. Bravo, Banachek!

Quote: Nothing's good with exposure even if it's to expose fraudulent psychics! By getting rid of fraudulent psychics by exposing their techniques, what about thoses of you called psychic entertainer or mindreader, etc. ???

As it was with Houdini, the only folks who ever seem to have a problem with it are the phony psychics.
I think Banachek, by clearly drawing a line between entertainment and fraud, benefits mentalists everywhere. Where it gets a little grey is with psychic entertainers, the folks that don't prey on widows with expensive and personal conversations with their recently deceased husbands, but rather converse with strangers, and offer services for entertainment only. ...............for such entertainers, I thought Banacheks language was a little strong in places. That was my opinion on last nights show.........there is apparently more debunking to come. My opinion might change if he starts debunking mentalists and entertainers We shall see. |

Is Banachek good for mentalism?
This has to be a yes given his work and reputation, take him out of mentalism and there is a very large gap.

The fact is, No matter how much anyone tries to "defraud" a belief system, those who truly believe in it, will continue believing, and those who doubt will convert. People more often than not, choose to believe in what they WANT to BELIEVE to be true, not always what IS actual, ABSOLUTE truth. Which is then a never ending debate of what is actual, absolute truth...

We had a similar show here in Australia where he exposed several book test methods. I mean, why???
I have no problems with exposing fraudulent psychics, but there are much better ways than exposing their methods, while at the same time bulldozing through the careers of several mentalists who work with high levels of professional integrity. So, just based on my experience with this TV program, I would question his approach and his level of thoughtfulness toward his peers. You want to educate people to differentiate between truth and false? Promote the seriously unknown and underdeveloped theories outlining the unity between science and religion. This and only this can educate the masses against naivity and promote a more rational approach to mystical realities Kam

I would guess that Jim is uncomfortable with anything on television which touches on the authenticity of the type of effects he and others use in the mentalism branch of magic entertainment.
Penn Jillette talked about this a little bit during a segment on NPR yesterday. He believes that part of the elegance of magic is in the trickery while his friend David Blaine believes it is better if the audience has just a little doubt about whether it was a trick or real. Both approaches obviously work for each of them. It has been said here before, but if you believe that something on You Tube or television seriously undermines your ability to entertain an audience, you probably need to take a closer look at yourself before blaming something outside of yourself. |

I don't think it matters if he exposes a few "psychics." Even if he exposes a couple of techniques, he's contributed so much to mentalism that he still comes out in the black.
