At any gig or performance I usually can't get a word in edgeways before someone mentions Dynamo and asks if I can put a mobile phone in a bottle, have I seen him do X, Y or Z?
Anyone else getting similarly frustrated? Admittedly I am relatively pleased that magic is being talked about again so it's not all bad. |

I know what you mean. Next time your down the pub and someone asks you if you can do the phone in a bottle trick, say you have a similar one and drop their phone in there pint. That will soon stop them talking about him.

Hey Chris, I've been getting the same thing recently too! I say something to counter act that and spin them my way. I tell them, that the thing with magic on TV is that you can't trust it because it could all be just camera tricks (I'm careful not to claim dynamo is using camera tricks because that would be putting the guy down) but in real life, there is no a camera so there's no doubt that it's "real magic".
I'm probably not the only one saying this sorta line when a TV magician gets brought up in conversation when performing and I find almost every time I say this and go in to an effect, the reaction is always that little bit stronger Probably because in the back of their mind, their saying to them selves "he's right, there's no cameras here, so how the hell is he doing this?!". Anyway, you may all ready use a line like this Chris but if you don't feel free to use it mate. Also, I agree, it's wicked that the word about magic is being spread. There's two people in my town now who want to take it up after watching the series. Wayhey! No more being billy-no-mates for me haha Cheers, Lloyd |

Hey Lloyd,
I'm fast approaching the tactic of simply saying "Sorry I've never heard of him" - I might well use your line though. I had a guy the other night trying to name drop by saying that he lived in the postcode BD14 and Dynamo is from the postcode BD12, I mean that's really stretching it a bit. By the end of my performance at his table he said "He might be Dynamo, but you're dynamite mate" - The simple truth is the Dynamo probably isn't better than any working magicians out there he's just got known and has a production team who can make "the impossible" happen. Glad I'm not the only one out there thinking this! Chris |

The same thing happened when David Blaine first hit the scene. The best thing to do is to say you're a fan of Dynamo too. You now have something to talk to the spectator about and can try and work some magic into the situation, e.g. "Would you like to see a trick that Dynamo taught me?"
The worst thing you can do is speak negatively about a fellow performer (even if they do deserve it). This will just makes you sound jealous. Quote:

This is true, but Dynamo worked very hard to get known, it didn't just happen to him. I don't like Dynamo's style, and I understand that these comments can get tiresome, but I do think he is a good ambassador for our art. Marty |

I don't like Dynamo, cant do anythng without having him mentioned. Anyone asks aout him I say the same thing, amazing what you can do with cameras and a consultant team bigger than your class at school. Seriously, I respect David Blaine, he worked with his consultants and PH to work some of his effects, a lot in fact, same with Derren Brown and Criss Angel. But I cant say the same about Dynamo, except I know magicians far more skilled and likeable that should have a TV show but don't.
I don't like people that say he dindt work hard to get there though, he did, I just don't like what hes doing now hes there. |

Yes. A lot of my friends who enjoy watching magic (laymen) seem to be raving about him at the moment. I think it's to do with the number of celebrity endorsements he has. He seems to have gotten in with a lot of rap stars and does their private parties. There are videos on YouTube of him performing to such people in dressing rooms.
Somehow he's landed his own tv show by doing (almost exclusively) marketed effects. Got to give him credit though, he must have worked hard to get there. |

He has found a niche in the market over here. The kids that like the whole hip hop and football thing haven't had a magic performer on TV for a while - for 18 year olds, David Blaine's street magic shows were a long time ago, and Derren Brown does different style and doesn't mix with the TV/Hello magazine celebs on his shows. So I think it's the first time many of them have seen effects like this. Good luck to him!

I just looked him up using Mr. Jacobs link then watched some videos on YouTube. Wow, to each his own. If people enjoy watching him, I'm glad. It's probably a good thing everyone isn't like me or else he might have a rough go at it. The one thing that made it hard for me to watch him, and it's not his fault at all it's mine, is I had a very hard time understanding him. I know he was speaking English but I really couldn't follow him. His accent is hard for me but the couple of clips I watched, he was mumbling and talking to his shoes.
Slydini had a thick accent, talked quietly but I could understand him completely and just mentioning him in the same post as Mr. Dynamo is horrible of me, but he's the first one that came to mind of someone with a thick accent. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Respectfully, To the great Slydini, Phil |

I agree with the original poster, his name comes up at every gig."Can you do this what Dynamo does ?" "No,but neither can he away from the cameras" was one response of mine having been asked for the 12th time at one do I did. I agree with the above postings, you shouldnt slate a fellow magi,it only makes you look bad in every aspect, but I couldn't resist the above in exasperation!
Ive upped my standards.Now,up yours!

Another vote for 'yes, at every gig' and I do think it is good for magic. Curiously the phone in bottle and obviously un-stooged moving tan line get the most mentions (even more curiously, I have not seen the TV show, but saw him at the International magic convention a couple of years ago).

I don't do gigs, not really confident enough... Need to get out more and perform to be honest.
Although work collegues, friends and sometimes random people if I do perform always ask if I've seen Dynamo or can do what he does... and once even was told "wow your good as Dynamo" I think it's a compliment, I've been luckily enough to meet Steve in real life and to say his one of the kindest and gentle men I've met is an understatement. He really took the time (A whole afternoon) to speak to myself and my wife about magic and general things. Before I met him, I thought he would be cock sure of himself and rude, but he was very down to earth. I also think highly of his work, you would be surprised of how many tricks he does on the TV he could do live just as well. (Obivsouly not walking on water or matrix effect though..."). I'm not sure what to say about how your feeling.... If people keep asking me I'd probley take it in my stride. |

Im not going to say that the boy doesn't have talent. I mean there are things that he does that I would never be able too. But then again a lot of those things are for of a WHY WOULD I NEED TOO! but I saw his special for the love of just watching magic and I must say that I was not overly impressed. If anything I was left with that feeling of "Hmm". I enjoyed his Dresscode, his hypnosis to not allow anyone to lift him, some of his close-up routines. But the facts are this, he is getting his name out there and is becoming known. Now if you want to be come a superstar magician then sure watch his style and see if you like, now if you are a hobbyist or a working magician then no, he is not someone in my Opinion you would want to immulate. But the boy does have serious chops, just not my style. Also unlike the man above me, I have not had a chance to meet him to say how he is in person all I can go off of, his what is being shown of him on tv.

As have many other performers on this board, I've gone through the equivalent of this over here in Canada with regards to Criss Angel (and sometimes Blaine), and I've given a wide variety of answers to test out how they play. You'll also get asked questions about other local magicians that they might have seen live, or perhaps one particular trick (card through window always seems to come up, more than any other trick, and perhaps more than every other trick combined).
Normally I'd say give an answer that's consistent with your performing character, but sometimes when people are talking about this they're hoping for something beyond theatrics. The smartest thing to do is (a) stay positive and don't bring your own ego into it, and (b) always reflect the opinion that they already have back at them. Everybody likes to think that they have good taste, and as somebody who will be seen as a connoisseur in magic, you're in a unique position to confirm that their opinions are correct. "I love Dynamo. His magic is awesome." "Yeah, he's wild, isn't he? He's worked really hard too. It's a great story." "Can you do that trick Dynamo did?" (Assuming no.) "You know, to tell you the truth, I've never learned that one. It's a great trick, isn't it?" (Give them some nonsense about how magicians keep secrets from each other) "I don't know what to think about Dynamo. Everybody's talking about him but I'm not sure what I think." "Yeah, me neither. He's very hot right now but I guess time will tell if he's REALLY good." "I hate Dynamo. It's all so fake." (If people are around, then let him hang himself.) "Really? He's very popular. What don't you like about him?" "I hate Dynamo. It's all so fake." (If nobody is around, look from side-to-side and then say) "I totally know where you're coming from. I'm a big fan of a different sort of magician."
