It is possible to block users so we don't have to read their insulting garbage without missing anything useful on a given thread?

No - but you can use the "Report this post" button.
It does work, if you can provide a decent reason other than "he disagrees with me". Not saying that you're protesting in error - I have no idea which posts you're referring to. Personally, I'm all for getting the trolls out of here. We've lost too many good people to those who enjoy being disagreeable. Ed |

To true. I can tell you from experience that "report this post" does indeed work.

Mostly I'm talking about the disrespectful posts.
For example during threads on current news events and certain people feel the need to write "Of course the **** (certain groups of people) do that," in every reply they write. Or political discussions where certain people ALWAYS refer to the current US president as "your messiah". I don't blindly follow or defend the president, but it's simply tiring and offensive to have to wade that kind of crap in order to follow a discussion. Didn't a high profile magic guru recently get banned from here for being insulting and abrasive? For a group of people in careers where public image and displays of respect are important, I'm surprised at the lack of simple civility. In the interest of full disclosure, I got caught up in an insult-peeing contest with a member some time ago, apologised for it and stayed out of debates for a while. But there are some here that can't participate in ANY debate with out insulting ALL opposing points of view. Thanks for the tip on "Report this post". I'll try it and see what happens. Maybe I'll find out that the management WANTS that kind of stuff to keep the Café more active. |

Beano, Sir:
Disrespectful posts, or posts you don't agree with? I've found in the past that when someone doesn't agree with my position, or I don't agree with someone's position, especially related to the present president, the folks who support the present president don't generally take it well when the folks who don't support him speak out against him. Yet when the same folks who support the present president spoke out against the former president, the folks who supported HIM weren't given much room for movement either. So Beano, it seems to me as Americans, we've lost the ability to discuss and accept other folks' positions. Both sides are EQUALLY guilty, including yours. For instance: I'm sick and tired of the present president, after almost three years, continuing to blame the former president for all of OUR country's problems. And by the way, if a political discussion takes place in a non-magical forum, are you saying that because you don't wish to hear someone elses negative opinion that he'she should be censored? If that's true, shame on you.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

To narrow this down a bit, in the examples given above, these discussions shouldn't be made in the first place. Topics about religion or politics are not allowed. When you see one of these, take the above advice and report it.
Reporting possibly offensive or rule breaking posts and not responding to them is the best way to handle these situations.

Bob1Dog,
I agree with what you said there 100%. So I don't need to report it as offensive In fact, I don't think the current US president is doing a good job either. But it's still disrespectful and offensive to refer to him with some of the terms used here in the Café. As it was with the last president, and the one before, and so on. A few times I've read the whole post of one of the ones that come to mind, and found that if I overlook the parts I found offensive, I agreed with the overall tome of the post. But it was still a disrespectful post, and sifting through them is a pain if one wants to follow the rest of a potentially informative thread. I do now tend to skip over posts by certain users but unfortunately some of them have useful things to say in other area of the Café. It makes it hard (for me) to take their words seriously in those threads with their "nasty" posts in the back of my mind. I know it could be my loss for ignoring their "good" posts and that is a shame. As far as just disagreeing with the viewpoint, I agree with you. I can discuss and disagree without making it personal, as long there is respect on both sides. In fact, many times that it is a good way to learn. Thanks for your spot-on thoughts, Beano |

Dave Scribner,
Even though I don't personally mind threads of those natures, I understand the need for such a rule. I won't report such threads just for existing (that could be a full time job in itself) but may start for the ones that I find offensive. Even then I tend not to do so until I just get fed up. And as mentioned before, I got caught up in one a while back, it got personal and I still feel bad for my part. So I try to give some leeway to others. Thanks for the reply. Beano |

One more thought:
I hope no one here thinks I do not appreciate the Magic Café and its members. I have been a paid entertainer since 1972, and even with that amount of time in the business I will loudly say that there are ALWAYS things one can learn. I have learned a lot from the folks here and hopefully have given some back. My ongoing thanks to all, Beano |

All points well said and well taken gentlemen.

I can vouch for the effectiveness of the reporting system. Why, I made a comment yesterday comparing Bush and Obama's near identical policies, and it's already deleted!
So yes, if a post contributes absolutely nothing to the conversation at hand, report it to ensure its swift termination. |
