Hi Illusion Dudes!
I was able to get up close and personal with Jay Leslie’s Elite Chair Suspension… I can’t rave enough. Jay asked me not to give out too many details, when we met up at the Hocus Pocus booth, you can ask him at House of Magic or Paul at HP directly, but I spent almost an hour like Sherlock Holmes investigating every detail. I was so impressed. He covered every bit of the chairs engineering, reverse-engineering, construction, and manufacture, and I was able to compare and contrast this model almost side by side with the other top-sellers. It’s in my opinion (and I’ve seen most of the models out there) a huge leap from the European model, light years ahead of the MAK model, and stronger, better looking, and more visually pleasing than anything out in the shops now. It’s worth every penny in durability and deceptiveness. This is a long term buy, an investment that will pay you dividends in shows and longevity, you’ll own it forever. Take my Magic Live word-- there are time-tested ideas implemented in the design that you can even guess at (I couldn’t) they don’t show but make this the best thought out one around. Even though it’s built like a tank and can support a ton of weight (maybe even your mother-in-law) it is roughly 35 pounds and comes with an over the shoulder strap bag for travel. Included is a detailed DVD that walks you through the process with a true pro, so you’ll be ready to get this working. The gimmick is sure-shot and goes on and off like greased lightning with nary a glance. The cloth makes the lift appear more real and the assistant further away from the chair. It does not sag—that’s does not sag. Jay stood on the board and jumped up and down. Jay is not paying me to say all these great things, I’m not even getting a free model. I’m just that kind-o-guy I guess. Magically, Walt |

For an audult you cant beat the one made by bill smith , witch is a copy of the robert harbin onr major feature is the hight , of the chairs ... while the elite chairs might take the wieght of an audult its better suited for a small cay or kid .

had they seen bill smith take on the chairs you might end up with a 0 out of 5 I don't mean to under estimate anyone work but the details on the bill smith cant be beaten . |

That must be you in the photo. I would say that Bills model is very nice. I would also ask if you have actually seen our new model? The chairs look very similar to rental chairs for weddings and parties.
This is similar to PC vs. MAC. If you started on a PC then it's what you're most comfortable with. That's fine with me. Kind of like owning a Mismade lady, as you know there are two basic versions that work slightly differently and the one you acquired first, will probably be your favourite. I have no problem with competition as long as no one is making something exclusive to our company.

Plus, if you paid a good sum for Bill Smith's, then it's unlikely you're going to find something you like more, unless it's very significantly better, which Jay's may or may not be. I am unfamiliar with both versions but would love to hear specifics on what you prefer about Bill's. I may agree with you, but cannot at this point without more information. |

Saw it at Magic live - LOVED it - much more practical in my working condition than the heavy version Bill Smith (it's very well made though) makes. Both are great - I owned a Smith version - sold it because too heavy for me - this new one is perfect and I saw Jay standing on the thing so it holds the weight.

I should have been clearer .. for an audult the bill smith looks much better .. the hight of the chairs is perfect .
yes its heavy .. but when I have an audult from the audience suspended .. safety comes first in both senses .. tipping and breaking let alone sagging because the lenght of the suspended subject is important in all versions exept for the bill smith ,if you had the illusion you know that well .. if you are looking for practicality then smaler and lighter is better but you have to sacrifice elegance and durability just compare both as they appear in the photos mine and the elite . |

I also don't like the Bill Smith model. Those just don't look like "real" chairs to me. I have NEVER seen chairs that look like that and to me, the angle of the seat back just looks way too slanted. I don't know if I could even sit in a char like that without more support on the lower back. I believe that the "Café'" style chairs in the elite version are much better. And, I agree... Everything gets beaten eventually. Bill designed his version quite a long time ago and to say that a newer modern version can't be better without seeing both in person is just not true.
Just my random thoughts... Mad Jack |

Dear mad ..
have you been to a store that sell chairs .. I have .. the varity of desighns you can find is amazing .. you cant say that BS chairs doesn't look like real chairs just show the photo of the chairs to a little kid and asck him what is this he will screem chaiiirs . just try it .you are overthinking .. bill smith designed his acording to harbin .. because he wanted to stick to the oreginal . witch is the best all others took the easy way .and modifyed normal chairs . |

It always amuses me when everyone gets in a p*ss*ng contest here on the Café. I have the European Suspension, and it's the BEST chair suspension in the world!! I even talked with Jay before I bought it and he highly recommended it. That was back before the Elite suspension, and I would probably have one of those if Jay had them available at the time.
Bottom line is the effect the illusion has on the audience. They don't care who built the prop, they don't care if the chairs are lawn chairs or deck chairs or plastic rentals. Their only concern is to be entertained, and any of the suspensions can do this with proper presentation. Jim |

I also have the European model but have had lots of trouble with the board popping up...can`t see it from stage but if I do it at a private party...and surrounded...its not good. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Brian |
