Having worked on this now for a solid 6 months, I thought I would pass along a couple of thoughts for whatever they are worth. First I have used just about every brand of bread I could find to use. Most breads crumble to quickly to be used, but I have found two brands that may be area restrictive, maybe, maybe not.
The best bread I have found to use is Wonder Bread, the next is Oven brand (brand name of Aldi supermarket). The best cup I have found is an expresso cup and saucer from Barrel and Crate, made in white china type with a thin band of decoration around the top edge. And last, if you are going to work on this routine, please give it the real time needed to master it, and tape yourself at least once a week to see how you are progressing. S. |

I have never bothered to use real bread for this trick. I use white poster putty (a white "Wiz-Tack", or "reusable adhesive"). I make the balls and let them air harden a bit prior to use. They have the necessary “tacky-ness” for the trick. I carry them in a plastic sandwich bag in my jacket pocket. I have to admit that using bread for the balls would be cheaper!
My cup is a demitasse cup from an antique store. You are absolutely right about taking the necessary time to learn the routine well. It is one that won’t be put into an act five minutes after getting it! This trick has got to be one of the best versions of the old “Dizzy-Dice” or “Two in the Hand, One in the Pocket” trick.

The bread considered normal in different parts of the world varies considerably. The standard bread in the US is called, among other things, "bread from a mold" in other places. It tends not to have a chewy crumb to it.
I had no problem using standard table bread for this in France and Spain, but standard there means something like French bread loaves in the US. Some restaurant-provided bread in the US can be similar, or one can buy a more artisan bread at many supermarkets in the US. There are cheap packages of plasticine/modelling clay, which I've run across both in the US and in Europe, for less than $1US and about 39 cents Euro. I've seen Mr. Lavand include this when he packages the 3 crumb trick as a standalone item. Roll the balls to the size with which you are comfortable, and then dust them with talcum powder or something similar to eliminate the tackiness. ++++ Incidentally, for all you Spanish speakers, Editorial Páginas of Madrid has a book in Castellano from René Lavand, called La Belleza del Asombro. It contains much of the material from the Kaufman book, but with the explanations and patter in the original language, including the 3 bread crumbs. |

good lead. Another one might be that there is a commpilation of Levand's 3 books and an expanded description (I think) of the bread crumbs.Published by an Eng firm, maybe Iternational Magic I always had the thought, since this is SO convincing, that Levand may not have fully tiped all.

I don't think there is much more to the trick. The thing that makes it so amazing to watch is that all the motions he makes are completely within his natural body language, so there are no tells when one watches him.
I saw him do it after having a rough knowledge from working through the published trick, and I don't think he strayed from the written explanation at all. I think the full work on this trick has been published. Lavand himself is astounded that so few people have learned it, as he considers it to be fairly easy in execution. Obviously, the real work consists of finding the natural gestures in one's own body language that will allow the steals/concealments, as using the gestures as laid out in the book might make your movements ring untrue for spectators. |

If you decide to learn this, please do Sr LaVand the courtesy of learning it well and rehearsing it extensively before you perform it, as it is an exceptionally beautiful routine.

I agree with scott, I believe this to be true with all of mr. Lavands routines and not just the breadcrumbs.

As I said in my post above, it is a “Two in the hand one in the pocket” routine.
Because Senor Lavand has only one hand, he uses a small espresso cup. Therefore it is a two balls in the cup and one in the pocket routine. The routine starts with three balls rolled from a small cup onto the table. Two balls are placed into the cup and the third is placed into the pocket. The cup is upended and three balls roll out. This is repeated several times under increasing difficult conditions including "flicking" one ball away. Always the third ball finds it way back into the cup. Finally, all three disappear. As performed by Rene Lavand the routine is true artistry and poetry. While there are absolutely no difficult moves in the routine it is difficult to sell the trick as convincingly as does Maestro Lavand. Like chess, this routine is easy to learn but hard to execute.

He kept a grupo f us entranced for 90 miunutes with this one effect!!! Yikes, that's a long trick! I've never seen the great Mr. Levand do this (though I'd like to), but I have to question the logic of others doing it. If this is a 2-in-the-hand, 1-in-the-pocket style routine than it makes perfect sense for Rene to perform this with a cup as an aid since he has no other arm. But how could it make sense to do this with a cup still if you have two working arms? Maybe I'm not understanding correctly. There is so much to learned from Rene Levand, he's such an inspirational magician, but I can't help but think that it's sort of a mistake to try to do his effects the same as he does them. They just won't work for anyone else but him.

One of the few high points of the Austin TAOM convention (2010) was watching Eric DeCamps perform this routine. I have always considered the work of Rene Lavand to be so personal that it would be nearly impossible for anyone else to do it without somehow appearing odd. Eric did a marvelous job of creating a tribute to Sr Lavand.

I've seen Eric translate for Mr. Levand once, and have seen Eric perform this a number of times.
He performs it as a tribute, and does an incredible job with the routine. Tom |

I do his one handed oil and water (you can't do it any slower) during a vent routine.
With the puppet on your hand, it is logical to do one hand magic. This could work for other vents/puppeteers. Harris
