Hello,
As a new member here I think I should tell you something about myself... As a kid (1950's/60's) I was a clown-magician performing for friends, neighbours and of course at school. Entering the teen-ages I became more interested in ... well ... other things but I held on to my "box of magic" (and the clown-suit) until it was lost at one time when I was like 25 and moved to another place. But my *interest* in magic was never lost. And in 1989 I had the good fortune to meet a magician, and we became very good friends and soon he used me to give him second opinions about his acts. Later on we started making props (gaffed cards and ropes/strings) together. As my father had his own work-shop we could also make gaffed coins As we bought *a lot* of cards we came to the conclusion that we had to be re-sellers in order to stay out of bankruptcy. So we made some original packet-tricks and gimmicks and started a small spare-time business selling them on convensions and such. I did never perform, however, as my job prevented extensive practising. And I do believe in practising before performing! My role was more to find solutions for his ideas (and to be down-to-earth when he was not). In 2002 we closed the business as I had to move again. And as my father passed away soon before that, there were no more gaffed coins for my friend Me and the magician were now only connected by mail and phone but we still talked magic. And talked magic. And talked magic... I became more and more interested in illusions (even before 2002) and bought some nice books (van Duzer's "7 basic secrets", Mayne's "Illusiontech", Woodbury's "Base Book" and Darwin's "Inexpensive Illusions" to name a few), not so much for building but for learning, as my job still prevented me from doing what I really wanted to. Another thing that I got fascinated in, was black art magic and I have a few of Dondrake's booklets and a DVD. One of the best things I've done in my life was to join with my magician friend at FISM 2006 in Stockholm, Sweden. I saw each and every stage-show! If I recall correctly there was like 130 shows all together... And now, 2011, I'm retired at 62. Now I have all the time I want and I'm assessing my experiences: What do I want to do in magic? I'm not a close-up person and I don't think I will ever be: I'm not particularly fond of cardtricks (although I really enjoy watching Lennart Green). Or coins. And such. Illusions *could* be okay as I, in fact, have access to a cabinet-maker's workshop (and the cabinet-maker himself ) But I think it's too much for a performance newbie. I think one has to be *really* used to perform on stage before showing illusions... So, during the spring and summer this year, I have written a script (well, more like a synopsis) for a short 4 tricks "mentalist" act - ESP, telepathy (mind-reading), precognition and PK. And as I've been lurking these forums for several years, I finally decided that I had to register. Why? Because I think the members here could really help me with a few details in my script... Yes! I register to get help... During my years as a lurker, there has been many times I've been tempted to join the discussions here but I've always found that there are others who have better/more experienced views than I, so why not ask about things in my script, that I'm not sure of, and hope that experienced members will reply? The more opinions the better, I think. Right? I hope we will have a nice time together! Regards, XerxX (Wow, a novel... )

Welcome XerxX,
Better late than never and you are not a complete beginner, you are only starting to perform now. It's fine to start here by asking questions. There are many Hobbyists who respond to questions with their perspective. You don't have to be a Pro. to have an opinion. Naturally you will begin to weight the opinions according to how helpful their past advice has been. It's a process. I have received good advice from people who were not full time Pros. They just had the info. I needed at the time. -Mary Mowder |

Hello Mary,
Thanks for your encouraging words! Regarding (not) posting: I read something and I think about it and I think that maybe I'll register to reply. But every so often I read very quick replies that made me change my mind Or read my own thoughts more or less. And to register only to agree... well... (of course that could make 50 posts - didn't think of that ) But now I'm here! Be prepared! /X

HI XerxX ! Nice to meet you here. I am not a close up person either, I get nervous when doing close up magic. I have more confident doing semi stage acts like ball manipulation and such. See you around!

Hi Miss J, the pleasure is mutual.
I can really enjoy a nice ball manipulation act; magical multiplying and colourchanging along with "pure" manipulation... :D Now I remember a Finnish(?) guy at FISM2006 who performed in his underwear! Wait! I'll dig the programme out. ...... I'm back. Found his name: Tatu. From Finland. Nice act but strange as he wore only his underwear. I suppose he did so, so we would see that he couldn't hide the disappearing balls. See you! /X

There's just now a discussion in the Penny forum regarding using real names or not:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=15&60 and instead of "spoiling" my 50th post in that thread, I thought I'd post this here, where it really belongs: I use the handle "XerxX" because it's a rather well-known name, actually nation-wide in Sweden. I've been a crusiverbalist (retired in Jan) for several popular magazines for many years, and that was the name I used. And according to mails and letters to those magazines, I was quite a good one also. My business is named that way with the capital "X" at the end, thus giving me a registred trademark/logotype of a sort. My (former business-)website is named that way and registred to my company. So I saw no reason why I should not use that name when I now plan to take up magic... Many people recognise it in a positive way - why not take advantage of that? I even created a special logotype for this new, magic, XerxX. And my name is Erik Hoppe BTW.
