I was just wondering if anyone knows of a good production box type of effect. I am doing a routine around the plagues of egypt and want to produce a bunch of foam frogs that I have. Unfortunately most production boxes only hold a couple of sponges. Does anyone know of anything that might fit what I am looking for. (10 foam frogs)

What about a mirror box?

A temple screen... as or or modified to hold more will hold a LOT of stuff!

Not sure what production boxes you are familiar with, and which ones you estimate only hold a couple of sponges. Since I am not sure if these are tree frogs or bull frogs, it would be difficult to tell you which would be best. However...
A Square Circle has about 80%-85% load capacity (percent of the size of the prop). A Pagoda Production Box has nearly 100% load capacity. A Mirror Box has 50% at best. Dove/duck pans have nearly 100%, too. Give us approximate dimensions of 10 foam frogs squished together, and we can probably give you a better estimate of what you might need.

How big are the sponge frogs? A Temple Screen should work just fine as Michael pointed out, as should a mirror box, a Square Circle, a Flip-over Box should work if the frogs compress well, a larger Drawer Box, a Chinese Egg Bag, a Production Casket and maybe even a Zebra Wonder Tube.
Some of the above items are a little more complex, others very simple, but all should do what you need it to. Whether you can fit some of them into your theme (if that is your ultimate goal) or not is another question. I hope this information is useful to you. Note: As I was typing this post, Michael Baker got his in before me and thus an edit. As usual, he makes some very good points. He also knows what he is talking about in the manner of production boxes - he makes and sells professional versions of them and does it very well. |

If you want to create the sensation of a "plague" of frogs, they shouldn't all appear from one prop. Every prop you use since the plague begins should have a frog or two or three inside it. As you dispose of the critters, you can palm them and reuse them to get the effect of frogs inside, behind or under every container in sight. Also find them in spectators who come up to help, using body loading techniques.

Maybe Tom Stone's Benson Burner would be something for you?

Wow, thanks for all of the different ideas. The Benson Burner effect looks fantastic, but am wondering if anyone has performed this effect. As my user name implies I am not anywhere near the skill level of an actual magician, is this an effect that is relatively easy to do?

It is a serious embellishment of the Benson Bowl routine, which in itself is not out of reach to learn, but requires some serious work to make it good enough for performance. The creator of the Benson Burner routine, Tom Stone, is a very accomplished performer, and one of the top close-up guys in the world. I think a gimmicked box is going to be the best route for the OP. The question remains, how much space is required? Ten foam frogs is a bit ambiguous. In most cases, though, such a box would have you displaying the box empty and the frogs would then appear basically at the same time (unless you had the benefit of showing the box empty at various points during the routine. I really like Spellbinder's idea of a continuous and cumulative effect. If it is possible to conceal a frog in the hand, that opens up a world of possibilities. Aside from that, you can even simply have one or two in as many pockets, and at given points, pause, and "find" another frog. Good comedy potential, too.

A dove pan should be able to hold ten foam frogs. They'll be scrunched up in there but that's what foam is for. Also you might want to look up "Rabbit Explosion". Tannens used to sell it, I'm not sure if they still have it. You could apply the same technique to your frogs.

Mr. Wolf, that is an amazing prop. Definately fits with what I would be looking for, but I also need to be completely honest in that it is a little more expensive than I was originally thinking. Does anyone know of a similar prop that might be a little less expensive.
Michael, I am not really sure of how to measure the size of all of the frogs together. Each one is a little bigger than a 2" round sponge, but very soft. This is where I got them from, http://shop.wholesalemagiconline.com/Foa......oryId=-1 not really sure if that helps. |

Ok. Makeupguy nailed it when he said Temple Screen. It's a standard prop that folds completely flat when not in use. It should hold all the frogs, and possible a few other things. If it doesn't hold them all, just carry the extras randomly in a pocket or whatever, as mentioned above. They don't even have to all be produced magically. The cumulative effect is probably going to be enough.

Just wondering if anyone knows about the Mikame Production Casket. The video demo would seem to indicate that it can be used for a multiple load effect, but as I am not sure of the actual product I am not sure if there is more going on than the video shows.

OMG. Those frogs are hilarious.
Nothing to add to what's already been stated, but if it were me, being I already have a Square Circle done Egyptian style, I'd use that.
