Well, there are three volumes to AoA, thus complicating your decision. The effects in both books are great. I personally like Smoke and Mirrors better. However, because of the volume of effects in an AoA volume, I may tend to recommend this. If you are only getting one volume, I would get either the first or the third. The first has the original Reset, which will quickly become one of your favorite tricks if you choose to get AoA 1.
Another thing to keep in mind, Smoke and Mirrors is no longer in print. The copies that are out there will find owners quickly. AoA will probably go out of print and back in print many more times. Just something to think about. Either one you choose, you cannot go wrong. |

Smoke and Mirrors is a wonderful book, and the fact that it is no longer in print should make you want to look for it ASAP.
Art of Astonishment is fantastic, and as a 3 volume set has an incredible wealth of material. But as it's not out of print, it could wait... -- Frank |

I agree with the other members, both are absolutely essential, however I recently bought Smoke and Mirrors because I heard it was going out of print. All I can say is WOW, get Smoke and mirrors first and then start saving for all 3 volumes of Art of Astonishment.
You won't be disappointed. Paul |

I have to say I agree with everyone above. Smoke & Mirrors is one of my favourite books (it made me track down the rest of Bannon's works, Impossibilia, Mirage etc). Although any Volume of AOA has more material, S&M will be a classic that will become more difficult to find over time. get S&M and buy AOA when you have the $

I know all of Bannon's stuff is great, but I've heard that Smoke and Mirrors is a little better than his previous works. To the people who have more of his works, is this true?
Thanks Trevor |

Yes it is. Smoke & Mirrors is every bit as good as any one volume of AOA, IMO. Just go for the one whose effects most appeal to you.

It's not back in print...if it were, it wouldn't be a first edition. Kaufman just has copies still. They're unused books, but not part of a reprint...the book is still OOP.

You're right Matt. I've just received an email from Richard Kaufman about Smoke and Mirrors. They do not have any more copies available 8-(. The recent orders must have been their remaining stock. Sorry about that.

It's not a question of which, it's a question of in which order to purchase. Like everyone says, both are superior books and should eventually find their way into your library and repertoire.

I personally perform more items from "smoke and mirrors" and barely do anything from the "art of astonishment" series. in addition, I also think that bannons material is a lot more practical.
joe, some favorite effects: tattoo you, one is the onliest, masquerade, detour de force, strangers gallery (buy the marketed effect as well), hop two it, timely departure, etc etc.. eric, I would get the book--though the video is not bad at all. but value-wise, the book will probably serve you better. youd probably want to buy "impossibilia" as well. |

Other than play it straight, what are some of the effects that people like from impossibilia? I have borrowed the book for a week. So far, just by skimming, I really enjoy the impossible penetration. Skimming definately does not do this book justice.

Strong tricks from Impossibilia:
Twilight Zone Assembly (great presentation), Discrepancy City Prediction (neat ide), Two Ahead (Is Better Than One) (excellent coin assembly), Revolutionary Penetration, The Brazz Zero, Shanghai Surprise, The Birnman Revelation, Shriek ofthe Mutilated, Cries and Whispers, Photologic (if you can find the tweezers). The book is easily worth the suggested retail. |

Personally, if I were interested in the books, I would purchase all of them...then I could decide for myself
