That was a very enjoyable read, Whit. Thank you -
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

As for theorizing about "ordinary objects", I get out there and perform. My experience has been that it just doesn't matter that much, in most cases, what props are used. As long as the object doesn't look overly complex or freakish, like most stenciled props, I'm not too concerned. |

Fair enough. I understand your points. For me to say 'do not use magician's cups' is not a good statement. I was wrong. I stand corrected.
However I do see merit in exploring options of other possible cups. But I now do not have a problem in using the magic cups. If I ever save enough money I might even buy a set. Quote:

Thanks for the reminder of what a monte operator would actually do, and for the other clarifications. I hope you don't think less of me as a student, I'm new. Thanks |

Tim, these are important questions to think about. I think that there are a wide variety of answers, and no one person has the one right "take" on the problem. I think you are doing very well to consider alternatives to the traditional cups. Your big plastic cups look great to me, and if you find they work for you, all the better. The only thing you did wrong was to try to make a universal instead of a personal and individual choice out of it.
I think more of you, rather than less. The less formal the show, generally, the more powerful it is to use everyday objects. You wouldn't want to pull out expensive cups at a party you weren't hired to be at, but if someone asks to see magic at such an event, I think it looks much better to borrow three coffe mugs, or dixie cups and use bread balls, or paper balls--just because it helps make it look like you were less prepared. If the final loads are surprising and impossible enough, it will be a real miracle. |

Thanks Pop.
Here are some better pictures of the cups I use: It might be hard to tell from the picture, but I think they are made of tin. You might have seen them at parties filled with party favors, candy, etc as they are basically shaped like a mini bucket. They are heavy enough that they will not blow away. They are large enough to use a small grapefruit as a final load or a large orange. They come in a variety of colors, currently I am using the yellow ones as my workers & I got an extra blue set that I will open eventually. I found them at Garden Ridge and I would guess they still carry them, if not the exact ones something similar. Including tax they cost just shy of $15 for one set. I use 1 1/2" sponge balls and the cups will seat together with a sponge ball within two cups. Most magicians think the sponge balls will blow away but I took Kozmo's advice and implanted a steel nut in each sponge ball and they will not blow away. I use sponge balls because I learned cups & balls from Tarbell and he teaches it using sponge balls. You will notice on the blue set a tray is included. The tray allows one to have a scantily clad young female assistant bring the cups out when one is ready to begin the routine. |

About 5% of the cups in the Cups and Balls museum are "found" cups. Some are much better suited to the cup and balls than others.
BTW, I also have two sets of Tarbell's personal cups in the museum. What Tarbell taught and what he performed with are not the same.

I started off collecting only "purpose-built" magicians' cups. In recent times, however, I've pretty much shifted to collecting pairs of "found cups", mostly silver. Pairs because my favourite routine involves the use of only two cups. I have hundreds of cups but nowadays when I want to practice or perform I invariably find myself reaching for a set of these found cups rather than a traditional set. My routine doesn't involve stacking the cups and there are no special moves where it pays to have cups with fat lips, bulging sides or dimples. So, the found cups with clean lines all round work just fine. Their "ordinary" ungimmicky appearance certainly doesn't hurt.

I've quite a few "found" cups. Been selling off my collector cups (run out of space)... when I perform I have three ways:
1: Vernonesque routine with Danny Dew gifted nickle-plated cups. 2: Vernonesque/Indian-ish routine with three Indian Offering Bowls, that the dealer told me were around 100 years old. Heavy, Brass, incredible patina and great ringing sound. 3: Rubber toilet plunger for a Tomsoni inspired Benson Bowl. Altho... of late, NUTTY SURPRISE with walnuts and a glass. (This one has the most fun aspect and gets great reactions).

Found cups are like yours. A cup you "find" in a shop not for magic. Egg cups, flower pots, etc.

Those are nice found cups. I like the color. I doubt very much if they would look less "innocent" than a set of Gazzo Cups, however, to your average spectator.
I have a similar set I play with. I purchased them because they nest completely and are easy to carry as a set.

As far as "found' cups go, if you like the vintage tin cup look, Trader Joes (and probably other grocery stores) sell miniature potted plants in galvanized pots. If it wasn't for my wife not wanting me to destroy the plants just for the cups, I'd buy a few and try them out.

It's a D@#^ cup! I, as many others, questioned why this was brought up then I remember Batman; "Some men just want to watch the world burn" Step right up! It's the cups and balls! -Lee |

You seem like a person with a fairly decent amount of intelligence. Have you considered that many of your questions might actually be answered by going to the Cups and Balls Museum? From the Museum: Quote:
Sometimes when a magician strolls through a flea market, a specialty shop, an antique store, a department store, or some other similar place, he or she will see cups that for some reason or another appear to be suitable or even perfect for the cups and balls. I call these "Found" Cups, just as Marcel Duchamp called the artistic-looking items he found in junkyards and flea market "Found" Art. Access to the museum is free. To obtain it, follow the instructions on the index page.
