Hi Bob,
You've always been an inspiration to me and I've often wondered what your thoughts are on the latest gadgets in mentalism, I guess now is the time to ask. What would happen if you woke up Christmas morning and Santa had brought you a load of goodies to play with... What are your thoughts? Is it risky to rely on something with batteries? Could they be the future of mentalism or just a niche? all the best Sean |

I prefer props that I can make and prepare myself. The latter requires that I understand how they work. That said, there is a place for electronic gadgets in mentalism, but I am afraid that too many beginners see these as a way to avoid learning the skills and misdirectional techniques of classic "pure" mentalism. Far too often they end up performing for audiences without having developed to the panache and presentational skills that develop naturally when one must rely upon his own devices and skills.
As Corinda once noted, I get much more satisfaction in mystifying an audience with just a pencil and a slip of paper than I do in demonstrating an out of the box "push button miracle." Good thoughts, Bob |

Thanks Bob. I agree, and there's something reassuring, knowing that you can get everything you need from the local newsagents. I regularly use two of your methods and I'm now playing around with a third... I do love gadgets though. Not just in mentalism, in all walks of life. Toys for the boys or something like that I just feel reluctant to rely on them and always have a backup (non-electronic) ready to go.
