Glue a layer of cork or rubber under your bucket, this way you still have the "clunk" from inside but less noisy.

I've used three layers of paper to get the perfect effect, cut to size and placed inside the bucket.

Does it have to be a bucket? Or if so, would it be okay to take out your pocket square and drop that into the bucket before you drop in the first coin?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Really boils down to: Do you want clinks or thunks? And when you drop a coin in the bucket, how loud does it normally sound? Adjust as needed or desired.

Saying a Miser's Dream routine is too loud is like saying a girl is too pretty! Yeah. The early players placed saucers or other objects at the bottom of borrowed hats to make sound. Honestly, if the sound bothers your hosts, either tell them to move to another neighborhood or select clients in different venues. If you don't want to wake your hostess' sleeping spouse, you can always use a paper bag instead of a bucket, preferably one imprinted with the name of a cheap liquour store. If entertaining the toney jet-set, use a help-me-please bag secured from your latest flight. |

Use a paper bag. You can still get a noticeable sound from the coins, and it packs flat.

A thicker or smaller bucket will reduce the amplfication effect. I use a hat sometimes and let the coins do the talking.

Well we hear about all sorts of problems on here, don't we ? I've never heard the complaint before, honestly.

Does the bucket have to be metal? Most performers use metal buckets in order to attain some level of volume during this type of effect. The above suggestions for dampening the sound are great, but I like the cork idea the best and I have used that one myself in the past. Try using different types of buckets made with metallic materials, such as alluminum, thicker tin, copper, etc. Depending on their composition and thickness, and depending on the types of coins you use, the sounds will vary in volume. Why not try using a wooden bowl, goblet or bucket, or a plastic bucket?
I remember doing this effect once after making a "bucket" out of newspaper. All I did was folded three single newspaper squares into an origami drinking cup, for lack of better term. To help it stay open at the top, all one needs to do is push up on the middle part of the bottom once you open it up after folding it, which creates a little hump or ridge. It is hard to describe but if you have made one or seen one made before, you know what is being described. Anyway, this actually held up quite well and it held about 15 Eisenhower dollars just fine, but I think any more than that would be too much. I hope this information is useful to you. |

In my hey-day as Town Crier, I was required to make as much noise as possible while on the job. Little did I suspect my skill sets would find a home in my magic.
The Johnny "and-another-coin-has-appeared" crowd at the time all used soft tri-corner hats to catch a few pennies. Their well-mannered parlor tricks created hardly enough sound to startle a doe. But, me? While roistering magically one night within the local pub, I found the need to attract attention in spite of the crowd clamoring around me. Inspiration struck and I conscripted a spittoon into service during an impromptu coin routine. The rest is history. |
