Professor Sir Oliver Lodge was an amazing man. Pipped at the post in demonstrating radio, he was the first person ever to hold the position of Professor of Physics. From the late 1880s, he investigated psychic phenomena in pursuit of new forces that could explain more about nature than electromagnetism and gravity alone. He wrote over 40 popular science books on topics ranging from telepathy to relativity, and was president of the Society for Psychical research form 9101 - 1903. He lost his son, Raymond, in 1915, and wrote widely about his experiences in trying to make contact. One method he used was called a spirit galvanometer.

The idea was that the sitters would join hands, and the people at the ends of the chain would make contact with a handle each, thereby making a circuit through the coil. Any electromagnetic interaction emanating from the aether induces a current in the coil, producing a very weak magnetic field, which moves the compass needle away from its north/south position.

Our version uses advanced artificial intelligence that listens to the room, waits for questions, and delivers the next in a predictable sequence of YES/NO answers. It runs for at least 12 hours on 2 x 20mm coin cells. There are no keyfobs, no receiver, no magnets and no compromise. Punters can even take the galvanometer to another room and use it for real.

The creepy promo video includes a sequence where the camera zooms in on the needle while Jo, the photographer on the product shoot, was actually using the device: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mFrpBWVFBw

Subversive Circuits is only making 50 Lodge Spirit Galvanometers at £350 each.
