A hundred years ago (ok, maybe 25 years ago) I saw Andre Kole LIVE. His Show was AMAZING!
But I have a question, during his intermission, he sat down in the center of the stage and went into a meditative trance. (I know that this is part of the act) But here is where it gets kool... after about 5 minutes he began to float upwards, and then slowly he started floating forwards towards the front of the stage, and then slowly floated back to center stage whereas he started the second half of his show. This was mind blowing, he did this while people were going to the concession to get drinks and chat... this was the intermission! Only the people that stayed sitting during the intermission saw this great levitation. But now for my question, has anyone else seen him do this? And does anyone have any idea how he did it? (you can private message me if you know) Because, I have no idea. There was NO Mylar, NO props around him except for the small platform he sat on at the beginning before he started to float forward. This is been bugging me for 25 years... so I thought I would ask.

Yes I have seen this and no I can not reveal the illusion to you as it is not mine to do so,
this is an invention of Andres and has been performing this for many many years. he does not do this during intermission but as the last effect BEFORE intermission. I have seen this done numerous times. have you ever seen his statue of liberty illusion! that's a killer too!! what a great guy and such an inventive magician sam

Are you sure there were no props on the stage? He used to do it (and also his pr photos show it) a large ring of light that went up and around from the platform he floated up from.

Yes Blair, there was a starting platform with a ring of lights around it, but when he floated forward... I could not see any way of suspension!
That is what has me befuddled. Posted: Dec 1, 2011 6:36pm Thank you for the link As I have said, it has been 25 years since I have seen this illusion. But It still gets me excited about the possibilities

John Calvert has/had several similar levitations, way back he did a spaceship (50's I believe), and he currenlty performs a floating organ with Tammy playing it. They both use just one of the principles being used in Kole's levitation.

Ok I should have said this in the first post
blair is right there is a ring of lights and Andre sits inside of this. andre never moves other then floating upward. the assitant moves the lights back words and Andre is then left floating above the stage with no visible means of support (its killer) the curtains th en close while he is still floating. I think I have some bootleg video around here somewhere LOL My Good friend Toby travis who used to have the 3rd largest touring illusion show in the country toured with andre prior to having his own show and then I toured with Toby. I remember while on tour with toby that Andre was in the next town over and we went to see the show and out to dinner with Andre afterwards. I had to bite my tonge so hard as I just wanted to ask how the heck he did that. it was years later that I would get to be in the know. Andre is such a great guy and incredible thinker. I would venture a guess that 365 days a year there is at least one person performing one of adres illusions or an illusion that he has helped bring to life. this is why Copperfield has had Andre as a magic consultant all these years. sam

Calvert originally used that form of Levitation, I believe, for an illusion he called "Lady Godiva" where a scantily clad assistant floated atop of a life-sized model horse. He later switched to the spaceship and the organ. Great publicity illusion.

Ah yes David, but was the horse lit? (I may not have remembered this.) But this aspect is what I was referring to. (Says he, not wanting to give much more detail.)

Andre invented a lot of great illusions!!! Copperfield knows exactly why he wants him as consultant and inventor.
I guess he performs fewer now. What a pity. I dream of once being able to see him live. |

Hi Blair - The horse was painted white and in a pinspot with the woman astride - her long hair hiding anything scandalous. The white horse, of course, gave brightness and focus to the scene with the tight bright spotlight leaving the rest of the stage in blackness, the illusion was complete.

BTW, this was in the 1940's. I know Stan Kramien saw Calvert perform the illusion at the Essex Theater in Newark, NJ in about 1945. I believe Calvert also performed it at Loew's State in NYC around that time.

Andre is still doing some tours though I think his son, Tim, has started to take over more of the shows.
Andre has been one of the leading illusion designers and thinkers for years. His legacy to this business is very sound. Also don't forget some of his smaller miracles like spikes through balloon or helicopter cups. Richard

Andres son Tim used to work with a female magician...Pamela Fyre. Does anyone know what ever happened to her? Saw her and Tim...along with Kalin, Kornhouser and a rotation guest cast in Dick Fosters "Spellbound" in 1987 at Knott's Berry Farm. Between my ex girlfriend...my current girlfriend and my best friend...I saw that show 14 times for FREE!! BEST show I ever saw (at that time).
Anyway...what ever happened to her? Sorry...didn't mean to change the subject. |

Wow, good memory! Pam McKovich was originally Mark Kalin's old assistant. She had worked with him when he did his first illusion show at Knott's Berry Farm which I directed. When she decided to work with Tim Kole, (and she changed her stage name to Pamela Fyre so they could call the act "Fyre and Kole") she brought me in to direct a few segments of that show as well. This was the first time Tim had worked alone or at least away from his dad. If I remember they did Andre's pyramid sword basket, a floating ball routine, a Broom suspension on a torch which rotated 360° and several other very clever routines. I still remember Dave Mendoza installing the torch mechanics under the stage and I only wish I could tell you how incredibly clever it was!
I always loved working with her but sadly lost track after a few years. Tim did a great job and filled the stage well. It seemed like a perfect vehicle for him in that show. lol... And now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

I worked with Pam in Akron one time with Harry Blackstone Jr. I think it was shortly before HBJ 3 died.
I saw Tim and Robin when they both worked with their Dad about 1976 or so. A few years later, I saw him again a few years later with his Dad but Robin was no longer working with them. Richard
