Saw this at IKEA the other day. It's a desk pad made of black leather (or maybe leather-like) material and is about 30 inches wide. It's called a "Knos" desk pad.
Seems like it could make a handsome, upscale, and inexpensive close-up pad. The surface has a little "give" to it, so you could pick up coins, etc. Cheers, Jerry Click here to view attached image. |

Its [relatively] heavy, cannot collaspe into something smaller and not practical for table hopping.
Decent for those looking to set up at one station only but well, why not just use a close-up mat that you can fold ? |

Eostresh:
That was a bit of a quick judgement of Illuminate. There are many venues in which a close-up pad works just fine for table hopping. Not every strolling venue has crowded, food/drink-covered tables. At least that's been my observation during my 28 years of walkaround performing. Steve H

For this pad that is 27.5" x 20", really?! ok if you say so. Way curious to know what restaurant/bar chain that would have that kind of ready clearance. Not to mention it is 5 pounds...really?! ok. Do a 4 hour gig with this thing and I'll reimburse you.

Hi Eostresh
If you read my reply correctly, it says "Not Practical for table hoping" and "Decent for those setting up in single station(s)". In no way do I indicate that a close up pad is appropriate, or otherwise, for table hoping. I do not do restaurant - table hopping magic but I have certainly seen, more than once, magicians carrying their small close up pads for table hopping performances. Since I am not a "street magic" performer nor do I do table hopping, I will not get into the whole "Close up Pad or no Close up Pad" discussion. For those looking at the pad, it looks "executive", "nice" and so forth - it has a metal backing that which the faux leather is stretched over. Because of the metal backing, this pad cannot fold up or collaspe. Also, there is no soft padding between the faux leather and the metal base. Anything you drop unto the desk pad can be heard. You will get a "thud-cling" like sound. I have this on one of my trading desks. Personally, I use Pattrick's Mats - they are well made, well priced and a conversation starter during my breaks. Pattrick has been WONDERFUL to deal with. He adviced me through every step of customizing the mat and getting the best digital effect.... Even though it took over 30-40 emails to complete the customization, Pattrick had been most patient in his guidance. During my ordering process, I had made many changes which Pattrick had been very generous to accomodate. Also, due to some technical issues that resulted in a VERY SLIGHT, un-noticable imperfection (which I cant recall what exactly of) on my mat, Pattrick replaced one on his dime! Its going to be about a year since I've gotten my mat and must say its served me well... So, instead of lugging around a large, heavy non-collaspable desk pad, why not just get something that "works more than just being a mat" The Knos Desk Pad is huge and has a metal backing under it - it cannot fold for easy transport and is larger than most hand carried storage cases. Imagine having to carry your case + the table pad. |
