That Kanter's Windlass was made by Thorton and it was a workhorse. Also something you never wanted to open.

The Kantner's Thornton Windlass was the best-made, heavy-duty stage Reel I've ever seen. One of those pieces I wish I still had.....it was built like a tank and worked perfectly every single time I used it. The new tango reel should be here tomorrow....I'll be interested to play with it, then report my thoughts here. |

OK....the Tango Reel came in and I've had a chance to play with it and view the DVD.
Verdict so far: VERY good reel and excellent instructions on DVD by Mr.Tango showing care and feeding of the reel. Time will tell how well it holds up, but yes, I would recommend one at this point. Darned good reel. |

Rainboguy,
How is the noise level of the Tango when operating? I've wanted to get a reel for something like Michael Ammar's silk through cup handle as he did on Letterman, but it seems like you'd want a pretty quiet reel for something that close up. Thanks for any information you can provide, Larry S. |

There's a little noise....but my experience with reels is that you need to break them in........ |

I got a Tango reel. It's works good as pull. But the tension of the reel is so strong (to make it quick). I don't think it 's usefull for the silk thru the ring/object. I haven't made the tension weaker, because I 'm afraid the real is not that quick anymore.
He is pretty silent. You can hear the reel when is very silent. Than you have to talk! The reel El Duco reel is very silent and fast! |

Thanks for the feedback on the Tango reel. When you start buying pricier objects (that often can't be returned), you want to get a good idea about the item before buying. -)

Just as an FYI, as opposed to the type of silks Mr. Tango used for his "Horizontal To Vertical Stripes" trick, I decided to go with the BEST silk ever made for this and ordered an original Rice's Flying Bar Silk (No. 487) as you can see here:
http://www.silkkingmagic.com/Rice's%20F......Silk.htm Superior silk in every way for this effect with a Reel, and the improved Rice's design, quality of silk AND instructions (gotta love those Francis Martineau line drawings) as well as a great price and superior customer service from Ruth Rice Crone make this a no-brainer. And even more good news for me, at least anyway: While cleaning up stuff in my basement, I found my old original Rice's Silk Encyclopedia Vol. 3 that I thought I lost. It's a pleasure to do silk Magic and have all 4 volumes of Rice's Silk Encyclopedia AND the index to Vols. 1-3, too. |

I own a Kirkendall Reel, I bought it for Silk through microphonestand, and iwas very disappointed, it is very weak, and so slow. So I had to tweek it with a stronger spring, Change the thread to nylon (stronger and less friction) take out the felt, to get it to the point, where it now work kind of acceptable in terms of speed, but the trade off is, that its much louder, and I still cannot work a lenght of silk, I saw Michael Ammar perform with.
I also own a ringfly - Reel, that is more silent, stronger, faster and better in every way. So, does anybody know what reel Michael Ammar uses? |

I would try giving Michael a call and ask him.......you can visit his website for contact information. If I know Michael, he's got at least a FEW good reels of various types, and uses them interchangeably....ask him though... |
